If you are holding an empty aerosol, pizza box or piece of wood and wondering which bin to use, the useful answer is the actual collection rule. This guide explains common decisions for Nigerian homes and businesses. Bin colours and acceptance lists vary by operator in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and other cities; overseas collection rules do not establish a local receiving route.
Recycling, reuse and waste processing: what is the difference?
Repairing a chair or passing on usable clothing keeps an existing item in use. Recycling involves processing discarded material into another product. Waste processing is broader: sorting, treatment and other activities can be involved, and a collected load may still leave residual rubbish. The US EPA recycling overview distinguishes recycling from preventing waste and reusing products. For a business, ask where material goes after collection instead of assuming every recycling-labelled bin produces a recycled product.
What are the 5 Rs and the 6 Rs?
These are learning frameworks, not one globally fixed legal classification. A useful five-step version is refuse unnecessary items, reduce consumption, reuse suitable products, repurpose what can serve another function and recycle accepted material. One six-step version adds repair. Other programmes use rethink, recover or rot: name the version you teach so staff are not confused by a different list.
Their practical importance is making decisions before rubbish is produced. A restaurant can refuse unnecessary packaging, buy the right quantity, reuse durable containers where food hygiene allows, repair equipment, repurpose safe materials and separate accepted recycling. Recycling alone will not correct routine over-ordering or packaging that has no local recovery route.
Can glass be recycled?
Glass bottles and jars can enter suitable glass-recycling systems. Drinking glasses, mirrors, window panes, ceramics and heat-resistant cookware are different materials or products and should not automatically join bottle glass. Recycle Now’s glass-material guidance explains the distinction. In Nigeria, ask the collector which bottles, colours and conditions it accepts. Never hide broken glass in a bag of hand-sorted recyclables; agree safe containment with the recipient.
Can you recycle aerosol cans and batteries?
| Item | Decision before collection |
|---|---|
| Empty aerosol can | Confirm the scheme accepts empty aerosols. Keep it intact; do not puncture, crush or flatten it. |
| Full or partly full aerosol | Tell the receiving facility what product remains. Ask for its appropriate household or business hazardous-waste route. Do not spray it out just to make it empty. |
| Ordinary used battery | Use an approved battery take-back or specialist collection route, not a mixed rubbish or ordinary recycling bin. |
| Swollen, leaking or damaged battery | Stop handling or charging it unnecessarily. Seek the manufacturer or specialist’s instructions and declare its condition before transport. |
These material-handling points follow Recycle Now’s aerosol instructions and battery collection guidance. They do not establish a Nigerian drop-off point. For full aerosols in Nigeria, ask the relevant waste authority or specialist collector for a receiving route first; product type and household versus commercial origin matter.
Can pizza boxes and crisp packets be recycled?
Empty the pizza box first. Current Recycle Now pizza-box guidance says empty boxes are usually recyclable even with grease stains, subject to local acceptance. Do not apply the blanket claim that every greasy box is forbidden. Remove food and ask the Nigerian collector whether it accepts the actual carton, coating and contamination level.
Crisp packets are flexible packaging, often made from layered materials. Recycle Now crisp-packet guidance directs readers to selected out-of-home schemes rather than ordinary home recycling. Confirm any local Nigerian buyer or scheme explicitly accepts them. A shiny packet is not a metal drink can.
Can you put wood in a recycling bin?
Do not put timber in a mixed paper, bottle and can bin unless the service specifically accepts it. Describe whether it is clean wood, painted timber, treated wood or a composite board. Recycle Now wood guidance uses separate recycling-centre or specialist routes. Nigerian construction loads similarly need an agreed receiving route; a litre capacity does not establish a safe loading weight.
