How much does air freight from Nigeria to Europe cost?

No single rate applies to all of Europe. Published rates from Nigeria are rare, and most forwarders quote on request. The table below shows the figures we could verify on the day of writing.

We could not verify a current published per-kg rate from Nigeria to mainland Europe (Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and so on); ask for a written quote.

Using the UK benchmark above, a 20 kg box of allowed dry goods would come to about ₦138,000 in freight before any London delivery fee. Treat that as a rough guide only: rates move with the naira, fuel prices and demand, and mainland Europe is usually quoted separately.

What affects the price

1. Chargeable weight. You pay for the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight. Express couriers such as DHL use length x width x height in centimetres divided by 5,000; general air cargo commonly uses 6,000. A light but bulky 60 x 50 x 50 cm carton counts as 30 kg at the express divisor, even if it weighs 12 kg.
2. Destination. The UK and major hubs such as Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels are generally easier to serve than smaller cities.
3. Service speed. Time-definite express costs more than end-of-day or economy options.
4. Surcharges. Fuel, remote-area, oversize and lithium battery charges are added on top of the base rate.
5. Type of goods. Commercial shipments need more paperwork and may pay clearance and handling fees.
6. Exchange rate. Many European deliveries are billed partly in pounds or euros.

European destinations

Forwarders in Nigeria most often ship to the United Kingdom, followed by Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain, where large Nigerian communities and trading links exist. Any EU country can be reached by air, but smaller cities may involve a transfer at a hub and an extra delivery charge. Always confirm that the forwarder delivers to the full street address rather than just an airport or office.

What you cannot send by air

Airlines, couriers and European customs all restrict certain goods. One Nigeria to UK air cargo operator lists these as not accepted: animal products, drugs or medicines, liquids of all kinds, perishable food such as meat, fish and dairy, weapons and hazardous materials. Other common problem items include perfumes and aerosols, loose lithium batteries, cash and counterfeit goods. If in doubt, ask before you pack; undeclared items can lead to seizure and fines.

Customs and import charges in Europe

The person receiving the goods normally pays import charges before the parcel is released. In Great Britain, gifts worth £39 or less are free of VAT, and customs duty applies to excise goods and to goods worth more than £135, according to GOV.UK. The courier or Royal Mail contacts the recipient if anything is due. EU countries apply their own import VAT and duty rules, so check the destination country’s customs guidance before sending anything valuable.

For commercial exports, your forwarder will ask for a commercial invoice, packing list and any product-specific certificates. Declare contents and values accurately; under-declaring is the fastest way to have goods held.
