DHL Aviation cargo is an air cargo capacity service, and choosing the right DHL channel is the first step. A small door-to-door parcel, a commercial freight shipment and an aircraft charter are different requirements. Using the correct enquiry route helps you obtain a relevant quote and usable tracking reference.

DHL Aviation, Express or freight forwarding?

DHL Express is the familiar starting point for many express parcels. Freight forwarding is relevant when a business needs a wider logistics arrangement. DHL Aviation’s cargo services include air cargo products, interline connections and aircraft chartering. Specify the service you need when asking about DHL air cargo in Africa.

An express parcel tracking number and an air waybill used for airline freight may belong to different systems. Follow the tracking instructions from the business that accepted your shipment.

Does DHL Aviation serve African destinations?

The official destination listing includes African gateways and Nigerian locations such as Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. A gateway listing does not guarantee a direct flight between any two places, daily space or acceptance of your commodity. Ask the local sales representative for routing from your actual origin.

How to request DHL Aviation cargo capacity

Prepare the origin and destination airports, commodity, ready date, required arrival date, package count, gross weight and packed dimensions. Indicate whether the shipment is stackable and whether temperature control or special handling is required.

Ask which representative handles the origin market and whether you should book through a forwarder. Request the chargeable-weight basis, available routing, acceptance cut-off and quotation validity. Airport-to-airport capacity may require separate arrangements for collection, clearance and final delivery.

When to enquire about a charter

DHL Aviation advertises aircraft chartering for oversized freight and larger shipments that do not fit its network schedule. Its services page lists aviationcharter.mea@dhl.com for Middle East and Africa charter enquiries.

Send a detailed load list and deadline. Ask for the operating carrier, aircraft configuration, approved payload, loading plan and scope of included charges. A charter can solve a capacity problem, but still needs a complete ground-handling and clearance plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an express parcel quote for airline cargo?

No. The products have different commercial scopes and booking requirements. Request a quote for the service and shipment you actually need.

Is a published Africa gateway a guaranteed route?

No. Confirm routing, transit points, capacity and commodity acceptance for the specific date.

How do I track the shipment?

Use the reference and tracking channel issued by your booking provider. If a forwarder booked the freight, ask it to explain both the transport status and delivery arrangements.

Turn your enquiry into a workable shipping plan

First identify whether you need a tracked express parcel, a freight consignment booked by a forwarder, or an entire charter aircraft. The DHL name can appear in all three contexts, but the booking and quotation channels differ. A retailer importing multiple cartons should describe the total load and desired delivery scope rather than use an express parcel rate as an airfreight estimate. Ask who handles customs, who pays destination charges and whether the quoted transport includes delivery beyond the arrival airport.

Compare the complete quotation

Ask for the total payable for the same shipment and delivery endpoint. A lower flight charge can leave screening, storage, handling and road transport to be paid separately. Check the quotation’s expiry date, payment currency and what happens if the flight changes. Identify who will notify the receiver when the cargo is ready and who pays for a delay in collection. Keep written acceptance with the booking reference before releasing the goods.

Our Africa–UK air cargo guide helps plan the documentation and delivery scope for shipments in either direction.

How Travo can assist

For a consignment travelling into or out of Nigeria, Travo’s international shipping service offers freight coordination, supplier collection and consolidation, customs support through licensed clearing partners and onward delivery. If imported stock needs holding before distribution, ask about warehouse storage and fulfilment. Request the scope for your actual origin and destination, including any overseas partner arrangements and local delivery charges.

Request a shipment plan from Travo with your collection and delivery addresses, goods description, dimensions, weight and deadline. Ask which services are included, which need separate approval and what the delivery estimate depends on. This lets you coordinate the ground journey with the airline’s confirmed acceptance.
