International air cargo from Africa to the UK, or UK to Africa air cargo, needs more than an available flight. The right service combines accepted goods, confirmed capacity, accurate paperwork and a plan for airport collection or doorstep delivery. Start with the specific cities and shipment rather than treating Africa as one destination with one price.
Choose the right shipping arrangement
An airport-to-airport quotation normally leaves you to arrange transport to the departure terminal and collection after arrival. A freight forwarder can coordinate more of the journey, while an express courier may suit smaller eligible parcels. A dedicated charter may be considered for a large, unusual or urgent load. Ask exactly which tasks the provider accepts and which remain yours.
For example, a spare part needed in Birmingham requires a different delivery plan from cartons arriving at Heathrow for a warehouse to collect. Likewise, delivery to a Nigerian city beyond the arrival airport adds road transport and local handling to a UK export.
What determines Africa–UK air cargo costs?
Provide gross weight and the dimensions of every package. Cargo may be priced using chargeable weight, which compares actual weight with a volume-based weight under the provider’s rules. A large light carton can therefore cost more than its scale weight suggests. Ask for the calculation, minimum charge, quotation currency and validity period.
Compare the same service scope: collection, flight charges, security screening, terminal handling, customs-agent fees, storage and final delivery. Establish who pays duties and taxes where applicable. A low flight-only rate is difficult to compare with a complete delivery quotation.
Prepare documents before handing over goods
- Give a precise goods description, package count, weight and dimensions.
- Prepare the commercial invoice and packing list for commercial shipments.
- Identify the exporter, importer and responsible customs representative.
- Check commodity classification, origin, value and any product-specific permissions.
- Declare batteries, chemicals, liquids, food, medicines or other controlled or sensitive goods.
- Keep the air waybill reference and agreed handover instructions.
For the UK side, consult the official import step-by-step guide or export guide. Business shipments may require an EORI number; requirements depend on the movement and circumstances. Northern Ireland has distinct rules. Ask your customs representative to confirm the procedure that applies rather than using a generic checklist as clearance approval.
How long does the shipment take?
Request the planned routing, connections, handover cutoff and estimated availability for collection. Flight duration excludes export processing, security checks, connection time, customs release and road delivery. Goods can arrive at an airport before they are ready for the recipient to collect.
For temperature-sensitive goods, confirm the handling arrangements at both ends and during any connection. Product acceptance must be secured before dispatch; an airline’s passenger route does not establish suitable cargo facilities.
Questions to settle before booking
Can I send personal effects?
Ask the provider about acceptance, an itemised inventory and the applicable destination procedure. Do not describe commercial stock as personal belongings.
Is there one cargo rate for Africa?
No useful quotation can ignore the exact origin, destination, goods, dimensions and service scope.
Does an air waybill guarantee doorstep delivery?
No. Confirm collection and delivery responsibilities in the written agreement.
Turn your enquiry into a workable shipping plan
For example, a UK supplier sending several purchases to Nigeria should establish who receives the goods in Britain, who consolidates them and who appears as importer at destination. Ask for a packing list after consolidation so the quote reflects the shipment that actually leaves. For an African exporter sending commercial goods to the UK, agree the buyer’s clearance arrangements before dispatch. In either direction, identify whether the price ends at the airport or includes delivery, and who pays duties or other destination charges.
Compare the complete quotation
Ask for the total payable for the same shipment and delivery endpoint. A lower flight charge can leave screening, storage, handling and road transport to be paid separately. Check the quotation’s expiry date, payment currency and what happens if the flight changes. Identify who will notify the receiver when the cargo is ready and who pays for a delay in collection. Keep written acceptance with the booking reference before releasing the goods.

How Travo can assist
For purchases from Britain, Travo’s UK shipping address service offers a registered receiving address, consolidation and repacking options for onward shipment to Nigeria. For commercial imports and exports, request a tailored plan through Travo international shipping, including freight coordination, customs support through licensed clearing partners and delivery in Nigeria. Confirm current offers, cargo eligibility and the total scope before sending goods to the receiving address.
Request a shipment plan from Travo with your collection and delivery addresses, goods description, dimensions, weight and deadline. Ask which services are included, which need separate approval and what the delivery estimate depends on. This lets you coordinate the ground journey with the airline’s confirmed acceptance.
