The fastest responsible way to evaluate a mining concession in Nigeria is to remove the largest uncertainties in stages. Start with title and existing evidence, then commission the fieldwork that answers a specific question. Flying a drone or drilling immediately may collect data without resolving whether you can lawfully and practically develop the site.

This guide covers ten due-diligence checks and potential surveys before a licence application, acquisition or major exploration commitment. They are not ten surveys universally required by law. The appropriate sequence depends on the mineral, project stage, proposed activity and current regulatory requirements.

First establish what you are being offered

Ask whether the transaction concerns surface land, an exploration interest, an existing mineral title or a proposed partnership. Obtain the actual coordinates and documents. A seller’s map, a sample photograph and a verbal promise should not substitute for original records and independent verification.

The Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office explains different mineral titles. Its official documents page provides application information. Check current requirements directly and obtain suitable legal advice for the activity and transaction; do not treat an exploration title as automatic permission for commercial extraction.

Ten checks to put into your assessment scope

  1. Title and cadastral review. Verify holder, boundaries, status, permitted activities and any transaction requirements through the appropriate authority.
  2. Surface access and community review. Establish lawful access, occupation, local concerns and practical arrangements before sending a team.
  3. Existing geological data review. Gather original maps, reports, sample records and drilling logs; check dates and coordinate references.
  4. Geological field mapping. Ask a qualified geologist to test the proposed host-rock and structural interpretation.
  5. Topographic or drone terrain survey. Map access, drainage and site geometry at the accuracy required for the decision.
  6. Representative geochemical sampling. Agree sample design, handling, laboratory methods and quality controls.
  7. Targeted geophysical survey. Choose magnetics, electrical methods or another technique for a defensible geological question.
  8. Hydrogeological assessment. Consider water availability, seasonal conditions and water-related risks where relevant.
  9. Environmental baseline and constraints review. Identify sensitive areas, existing disturbance and applicable assessment obligations.
  10. Integrated technical and commercial review. Decide whether evidence supports further exploration, and what uncertainty remains before investment.

Drilling and metallurgical testwork may become essential at later stages. Include them when the evidence and authorised scope justify the expenditure. Do not order every technique merely to make a report look comprehensive.

A faster assessment uses decision gates

StageQuestionDecision
Desktop screeningAre rights, location and original records credible?Stop, resolve gaps or plan reconnaissance
Initial fieldworkDoes ground evidence support the geological model?Reject the model or design targeted tests
Target evaluationDo independent tests support continuity?Revise targets or consider authorised drilling
Project assessmentCan technical, environmental and commercial conditions support development?Seek further studies or pause investment

Assign a responsible reviewer and a stopping rule to each stage. For example, unresolved title overlap should trigger clarification before expensive mobilisation. Weak sampling evidence should trigger review rather than a sales claim about a proven deposit.

For technical method selection, see aerial mapping and terrain surveys, drone magnetometer surveys and groundwater survey planning.

How to turn a mineral discovery into a licence pathway

A discovery does not itself grant a mineral title. Identify the proposed activity, check whether the area is available and establish the appropriate application or transaction route. Confirm required company, technical, financial and environmental documentation with the Mining Cadastre Office and relevant advisers.

Record the evidence accurately: an occurrence, a tested exploration target and an assessed resource are different stages. Avoid submitting or marketing an unsupported resource estimate. Keep the underlying data and professional interpretation available for scrutiny.

Ghana has its own framework and title types, outlined by the Ghana Minerals Commission. Do not copy a Nigerian application checklist into a Ghanaian concession project without local review.

What should your final assessment report contain?

Request a location and boundary map, evidence register, title-review status, survey methods, findings, limitations and prioritised recommendations. Each recommendation should state the question it addresses, expected output and why it is worth the cost.

Separate verified facts from interpretations and unresolved issues. If reports disagree, preserve the disagreement and propose a test to resolve it. An investor should be able to follow the reasoning from raw evidence to the next expenditure decision.

How Travo can help organise the work

Send Travo the concession boundary, target commodity, intended transaction and reports you already hold. We can discuss staged survey requirements and coordinate the supporting field-team travel, equipment transport and access logistics. Confirm which qualified specialist is responsible for each technical and regulatory task.

Common questions

Must every concession have LiDAR and magnetics?

No. Survey selection should follow the geological and operational problem. Existing reliable data may already answer part of the question.

Can this evaluation guarantee a profitable mine?

No. It reduces uncertainty and can reveal reasons not to proceed. Viability requires further technical, economic and regulatory assessment appropriate to the project stage.
