Choosing between a small drone and a large drone starts with the task and the result you need. Aerial photographs, a measured survey, inspection imagery and cargo delivery have different aircraft, sensor, operating and permission requirements. Size alone does not establish that a drone can perform the job or that a flight is authorised in Lagos.

“Small” and “large” in a booking menu should not be treated as the legal category or an exact payload limit. Obtain the actual aircraft and sensor specification from the operator and confirm the relevant regulatory requirements. A larger airframe may carry different equipment, but it does not automatically produce a more accurate survey or permit a more complex operation.
Define the result before selecting the drone
For a construction or land survey, explain whether you need photographs for progress reporting or measured mapping for a professional workflow. Ask how accuracy will be assessed, what ground information is needed and which coordinate reference and file formats will be used. A visually attractive aerial image is not, by itself, a certified boundary or a complete engineering investigation.
For inspection, identify the asset and the question: roof condition, an inaccessible structure, a corridor or another defined feature. Agree what imagery and report will be delivered, what limitations apply and whether another inspection method is needed. Do not assume that a camera, thermal sensor or software output can answer every question without specialist interpretation.
Permissions and site access in Nigeria
The NCAA RPAS portal and NCAA announcement about the drone portal provide official starting points for registration and regulatory information. The operator should confirm the current authorisations applicable to the aircraft, mission and location. A client’s permission to enter land does not by itself grant permission to use the surrounding airspace.
Tell the provider about nearby airports or heliports, restricted or sensitive sites, public activity and access constraints. Agree the site contact and any ground arrangements through the appropriate channels. Do not request a launch from an unapproved location or assume that a category displayed on a platform means the operation has already been cleared.
Cargo drones: ask for operational acceptance
For a proposed delivery, state the item, packaging, weight, dimensions, urgency and both handover locations. Ask whether the service is actually available and authorised for that route and cargo. A survey aircraft cannot be assumed to accept a parcel, and an advertised maximum payload is not the complete operating assessment for every flight.
Confirm custody, packaging, handling, receiving arrangements and what happens if the movement cannot proceed. A delivery request may be better handled by a conventional rider, van, truck or another permitted service. Choose the mode that meets the real requirement rather than treating a drone as an automatic way around road traffic.
Data, privacy and professional interpretation
Agree what will be captured, who can access the data and how it will be delivered and retained. Identify areas that should not be recorded and discuss them with the operator before the survey plan is finalised. If the work feeds a legal, engineering or investment decision, confirm the qualifications and scope of the professional interpreting the results.
Avoid promises that an aerial survey will reveal every underground feature, identify every material or remove the need for ground verification. The appropriate method depends on the question, site and professional assessment. Ask for a written statement of deliverables and limitations so you can compare providers on the same work.
Prepare a useful Lagos drone quotation request
Send the site boundary or location privately, approximate area, access window, purpose, output requirements and deadline. Ask the quote to identify permissions, mobilisation, aircraft and sensors, ground control where relevant, processing, reporting, rework and weather-related changes. If only an initial feasibility review is offered, distinguish that from a confirmed flight and final deliverable.
