Choosing a delivery vehicle in Lagos starts with the load, not the cheapest vehicle icon. A delivery bike, motorbike, van and truck have different acceptance conditions, cargo protection and access needs. Give the item description, dimensions, weight, pickup and delivery requirements before requesting a vehicle so the quotation covers a workable movement.
Compare the requested vehicle types
| Vehicle label | Check before booking |
|---|---|
| Delivery Bike | Clarify bicycle versus motorbike and the operator’s actual parcel limits. |
| Delivery Motorbike | Parcel dimensions, weight, packaging, item acceptance and handover. |
| Delivery Van / Light Commercial Van | Usable cargo space, door opening, payload and loading access. |
| Large Commercial Van | Actual load dimensions and weight; a larger body does not establish its payload. |
| Light Commercial Truck | Load bed or box dimensions, permitted load and handling equipment. |
| Large Commercial Truck / Delivery Truck | Body type, load distribution, site access and loading method. |
| 2 Door Truck | Usually a cab-layout description; verify seating, cargo bed and carrying limits. |
| 4 Door Truck | Cab doors do not establish cargo space or payload; confirm the exact configuration. |
Delivery bike or motorbike: use it for an accepted parcel
In everyday booking language, “bike” may refer to a motorcycle rather than a pedal bicycle. Confirm which vehicle is offered. Supply the packaged dimensions and weight, whether the item is fragile or temperature-sensitive, and any handling restrictions. A small-looking parcel is not automatically suitable for motorcycle delivery; the operator must accept the actual contents and load.
For a document or compact retail order, provide a collection contact, ready time, receiving contact and any return-signature requirement. For a high-value item, agree the handover evidence and applicable liability terms. Do not treat a courier receipt as proof of a product’s technical condition or authenticity; any inspection needs a separately agreed scope.
Commercial vans: space and payload are different
A light commercial van may suit cartons, appliances or a small move where an enclosed cargo area is useful. A large commercial van may offer more volume, but usable space depends on the body, wheel arches, partitions and loading opening. A tall item can fit inside the advertised body height yet fail to pass through the door, so measure the packaged item and the relevant opening.
Ask the supplier to confirm permitted payload for the specific vehicle and the load it will actually carry. Manufacturer guidance such as Ford’s payload and towing explanation distinguishes what a vehicle carries from what it can tow. Passengers, equipment and the actual configuration affect the assessment. Do not estimate a safe load from the words “large van” or from a photograph.
Two-door and four-door trucks: identify the cargo body
A pickup with more cab doors may prioritise passenger access without providing more load-bed space. Ask for the make, model, cab layout, bed dimensions and actual permitted load. If workers travel with equipment, confirm proper passenger seating separately; a cargo area is not a substitute for passenger accommodation.
For a box truck, flatbed or another commercial body, identify weather protection, loading height and restraint needs. The supplier should confirm the vehicle is suitable for the goods and loading method. A request for a “delivery truck” is incomplete without the cargo brief. Photos can help, but include measured dimensions, quantity and weight where available.
Plan loading and delivery in Lagos
Give the exact gate, road access, overhead clearance and permitted arrival window at both ends. Ask about loaders, forklifts, tail lifts or cranes before dispatch. Delivering a refrigerator to an upstairs flat is different from leaving a pallet at a ground-floor receiving bay. Stairs, waiting, dismantling and extra trips should be identified in the quotation.
For a warehouse-to-store run, tell us the stop sequence, carton counts, receiving hours and proof-of-delivery requirements. For a port collection, the vehicle must also fit the release and terminal procedure. Use the Lagos logistics-location guide to distinguish cargo terminals, courier depots, warehouses and truck parks before sending a driver.
Compare the total delivery price
Request a written scope covering vehicle, driver, fuel, loading, unloading, waiting, tolls and additional stops where relevant. State whether the journey is one way, a return or a recurring distribution run. A lower vehicle-only quote may exclude handling that another quote includes. Compare the same load and service before deciding.
