Uber Nigeria does not publish a fixed list of approved car models. Its official rules say a car must be model year 2000 or newer, have four doors, be in good condition with no cosmetic damage and have a working radio. For UberX it must be a four-door sedan that seats at least four passengers plus the driver, with working windows and air conditioning. You also need a vehicle inspection report, insurance, a roadworthiness certificate and a valid hackney permit. In Lagos, the state government also requires e-hailing vehicles to be registered and inspected.
Before you buy a car to drive with Uber in Lagos or Abuja, check it against Uber’s actual requirements, not just what other drivers are using. A model that is on the road with Uber is not automatically eligible in every year or condition. Extra rules in Lagos
In August 2025 the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation told e-hailing operators, including Uber, Bolt, Lagride and InDrive, to have their drivers present vehicles for roadworthiness inspection. The ministry said only vehicles registered with the Lagos State Government would be allowed to operate, and it also listed driver certification from the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), enhanced driver verification and licence checks. Vehicles found unfit can be barred from Lagos roads. Check the latest requirements with the ministry before you register.

What stops a car from being approved
- Model year older than 2000
- Two-door body, or a hatchback where UberX needs a sedan
- Visible dents, scratches or other cosmetic damage
- Faulty air conditioning or windows
- Commercial or taxi markings, or a former government car
- Salvaged or rebuilt title
- Missing inspection report, insurance, roadworthiness certificate or hackney permit
How to check a car before you buy it
- Confirm the model year from the vehicle papers, not the seller’s word.
- Test the air conditioning and every window. Both are UberX requirements.
- Walk round the body in daylight and look for dents, rust and mismatched paint.
- Ask about accident and rebuild history. Rebuilt vehicles are not accepted.
- Check the paperwork can be completed in your name: insurance, roadworthiness, hackney permit and, in Lagos, state registration.
- Check in the Uber driver app or with Uber support before you pay, especially for used cars from dealers.
Choosing a car that pays in Lagos traffic
Approval is only the start. Your running costs decide what you earn. Before buying, compare:
- Fuel use in slow traffic. Smaller engines usually cost less per day.
- Spare parts. Common models are cheaper and quicker to fix.
- Mechanic familiarity. A car every roadside mechanic knows saves downtime.
- Air conditioning reliability. AC faults can take the car off UberX; budget for servicing.
- Boot space and comfort for airport trips.
- Resale value when you upgrade.
Do you need to own a car to drive with Uber?
