How DHL works out your Nigeria-to-UK price
- Chargeable weight. DHL Express charges on whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric (dimensional) weight. Volumetric weight = length × width × height (cm) ÷ 5,000.
- Base rate. This depends on the chargeable weight, the service you choose and the destination zone. DHL gives it in your quote.
- Fuel surcharge. A percentage added to the transport charge, reset every week.
- Other surcharges if they apply, such as remote-area delivery, oversize pieces, lithium batteries or address corrections.
- UK import charges (VAT and any duty), which are not part of the DHL shipping rate.

The lesson: a large, light box of clothes can cost as much as a small, heavy one. Pack tightly and use the smallest box that fits.

UK VAT and customs duty: what the receiver may pay
UK import charges are separate from the DHL shipping price. According to GOV.UK:
- Gifts worth £39 or less: no VAT.
- Goods worth £135 or less: no customs duty on non-excise goods.
- Goods over £135: VAT is paid to the delivery company before or on delivery, and customs duty may apply depending on the type of goods and where they come from.
- VAT is worked out on the value of the goods plus postage, packaging, insurance and any duty.
- Excise goods such as alcohol and tobacco are taxed at any value.
- The delivery company sends a bill and normally holds the parcel for about three weeks before returning it if unpaid.
DHL also says import duties and taxes are not included in its shipping rate. They are normally paid by the receiver, but the sender can choose to pay them depending on the billing option selected.
Documents you need
- Commercial or proforma invoice for most non-document shipments, with a clear description, accurate value, country of origin and tariff code where possible.
- Any permits or certificates required for the goods.
- A valid ID when you drop off at a service point.
Never send cash or banned items; read can you send money in a DHL package from Nigeria before packing.

- Weigh and measure the packed parcel in kilograms and centimetres.
- Go to DHL Nigeria’s Get a Quote page and enter origin, UK postcode, weight and dimensions.
- Compare Express Worldwide with any cheaper option offered.
- Add the current fuel surcharge if it is not already shown, plus any surcharge from the table above.
- Check with the receiver whether UK VAT or duty will be due.
