Quick answer
To track a package, copy the tracking number from your shipping confirmation, open the tracking page of the company carrying it (DHL, FedEx, UPS, NIPOST or the courier named on your receipt) and paste it in. If you do not know the carrier, a multi-carrier tracker such as 17TRACK can detect it. If the number shows nothing, wait 24 to 48 hours after dispatch and then contact the sender.

Whether you ordered something from abroad, sent documents to another state or are waiting for goods from a supplier, the tracking number is your window into where the parcel is. This guide explains what a tracking number is, how to use it with the main couriers operating in Nigeria, what the common status messages mean, and what to do when tracking does not work.
What is a tracking number?
A tracking number (also called a waybill number, air waybill, consignment number or tracking ID) is a unique code a courier assigns to a shipment when it is booked. Every time the parcel is scanned, at pickup, at a hub, on departure, at customs or on delivery, the scan is logged against that number. That is what you see when you track online.
Formats differ between companies. Some use only digits; others mix letters and numbers. International postal items handled by post offices, including NIPOST, usually use a mix of letters and digits. You do not need to memorise formats: the shipper or online shop that sent your order is the best place to get the correct number. DHL notes that the confirmation email or shipment notification from an online shop often contains it.
How to track a package using the tracking number
- Find the number. Check your order confirmation email, SMS, receipt or waybill. If a friend or supplier sent it, ask them to send a photo of the receipt.
- Identify the carrier. The receipt or email usually names the courier. If it only says "shipped", look for a carrier logo or use a multi-carrier tracker.
- Open the official tracking page. Use the carrier's own website or app (links below), not a link from an unexpected SMS.
- Paste the number exactly. Remove spaces at the start and end. DHL's tracker accepts several numbers at once separated by commas, spaces, tabs or semicolons.
- Read the latest scan and the expected delivery date. Turn on notifications if the carrier offers them.
- Keep the number until the parcel is delivered in good condition, in case you need to make a claim.

Common package status updates and what they mean
| Status (wording varies) | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Label created / shipment information received | The sender has booked the shipment but the courier has not collected it yet | Wait; if nothing changes after 2 to 3 days, ask the sender |
| Picked up / shipment collected | The courier has the parcel | Nothing; tracking will update at the next scan |
| In transit / departed facility / arrived at hub | Moving through the network | Normal; gaps of a day or more on international routes are common |
| Held at customs / clearance in progress | Customs is checking the parcel; duty may be due | Respond quickly if the courier asks for documents or payment through its official channel |
| Out for delivery / with delivery courier | On the vehicle for delivery today | Keep your phone on and someone available to receive it |
| Delivery attempted / recipient not available | The courier could not complete delivery | Rebook delivery or arrange pickup from the carrier |
| Delivered | The courier recorded a handover | If you did not receive it, contact the carrier the same day |
| Exception / delay | Something has gone wrong, such as a wrong address, weather or a missed connection | Contact the carrier with your tracking number |
General explanations; each carrier uses its own wording.
What if my tracking number doesn't work?
- It is too early. Many numbers show nothing until the first scan. Give it 24 to 48 hours after the sender says it was shipped.
- Wrong carrier. Some international orders are handed from one carrier to another (for example, to a local courier or the post office for final delivery). Try the number on a multi-carrier tracker, or ask the seller for the last-mile carrier's number.
- Typing error. Check for confusing characters such as O and 0, or I and 1, and remove spaces.
- Reference number instead of tracking number. An order number from a shop is not the same as a courier tracking number. FedEx allows tracking by reference, but most carriers need the actual tracking ID.
- Stuck for days on one status. Contact the carrier with the tracking number, the sender's name and the shipping date. For NIPOST items, the tracking site has help topics on delayed shipments and claims for lost items.
Beware of fake tracking and customs fee messages
Scammers send SMS, WhatsApp and email messages that look like courier alerts, asking you to click a link and pay a "release fee" or "customs charge". Protect yourself:
- Only track on the official carrier website or app, typed in yourself.
- Check that a message mentions a tracking number you actually recognise.
- Never pay duty or fees into a personal bank account. Genuine duty is paid through the carrier's official invoice or payment channel.
- Do not share card PINs or OTPs with anyone claiming to be from a courier.
Sending a parcel yourself? Track it from booking to delivery
If you are the sender, give the receiver the tracking or order number and the carrier's name as soon as you book. Take a photo of the waybill and the packed item, and write the receiver's full address and a working phone number clearly. A correct address speeds up delivery; our Nigeria postal code guide can help you find the right code.
With Travo you can book a parcel pickup and delivery within your city or between states, and message our team on WhatsApp for updates on your order. For interstate options and costs, see our Lagos to Benin waybill cost guide and why businesses use a logistics app.

Frequently asked questions
Can I track a package without a tracking number?
Sometimes. FedEx lets you track by a reference number, and NIPOST accepts delivery notice card or reference numbers. Otherwise ask the sender or shop for the tracking number.
How do I know which courier has my package?
Check the shipping email or receipt for a carrier name. If it is not shown, paste the number into a multi-carrier tracker such as 17TRACK, which says it covers more than 3,500 carriers.
Why does my tracking say no information found?
The parcel may not have been scanned yet, the number may have a typing error, or it may belong to a different carrier. Wait 24 to 48 hours, check the number, then contact the sender.
Can I track several packages at once?
Yes on some sites. DHL accepts several tracking IDs separated by commas, spaces, tabs or semicolons, and NIPOST accepts several numbers separated by commas.
My parcel is held at customs. What should I do?
Wait for the carrier to contact you and pay any duty only through its official invoice or payment channel. Do not respond to unexpected payment links.
How do I track a NIPOST parcel?
Use the NIPOST Track and Trace site at tracking.nipost.gov.ng with the tracking or reference number from your receipt.
