Quick answer
There is no fixed public DHL price per kg from Nigeria to the USA. DHL Express quotes each shipment on its chargeable weight, which is the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight (L × W × H in cm ÷ 5,000). It then adds a weekly fuel surcharge (46.25% for 28 September to 4 October 2026, 48% from 5 October) and any fixed surcharges in naira. US import duties and taxes are extra. Searches for “DHL Nigeria price list 2026” and “how much is DHL per kg from Nigeria to USA” turn up many tables with no date or source. Rather than repeat guesses, this guide shows how DHL really prices a parcel to the United States, the official charges DHL Nigeria publishes, and how to estimate and reduce your bill.
Why DHL does not charge a flat “per kg” price
A courier price is built from several parts, and only one of them is weight:
- Chargeable weight: DHL charges on the actual weight or the dimensional weight, whichever is greater.
- Service speed: time-definite services such as Express 9:00 cost more than Express Worldwide.
- Destination: rates differ by destination country and zone.
- Fuel surcharge: a percentage that DHL Nigeria updates every week.
- Extra surcharges: for example remote-area delivery or lithium batteries.
Because of the fixed parts of the price, dividing one quote by its weight does not give a “per kg” rate you can safely apply to a different parcel.
Step 1: work out your chargeable weight
Measure the packed box in centimetres and apply DHL Express’s divisor of 5,000:
Volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height (cm) ÷ 5,000
| What you are sending | Box (cm) | Actual | Volumetric | Chargeable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Documents in a flyer | 35 × 27 × 2 | 0.5 kg | 0.38 kg | 0.5 kg (actual) |
| Foodstuff, tightly packed | 40 × 30 × 20 | 9 kg | 4.8 kg | 9 kg (actual) |
| Clothes and shoes | 50 × 40 × 40 | 7 kg | 16 kg | 16 kg (volumetric) |
Arithmetic examples using the 5,000 cm³/kg DHL Express factor (Wikipedia, Dimensional weight). DHL may round up to its own weight steps.
The clothes example shows why bulky, light parcels to the USA get expensive: you pay for 16 kg even though the box weighs 7 kg.
Step 2: get the base price from DHL
- Open DHL Nigeria’s Get a Quote page.
- Enter your Nigerian pickup city, the US ZIP code, the weight and the box dimensions.
- Compare the services offered and note whether the fuel surcharge is included.
- If you are walking in, DHL’s Express Easy service takes parcels from 500 g to 25 kg and accepts cash or card.
Step 3: add the fuel surcharge
| Week (2026) | DHL Nigeria fuel surcharge |
|---|---|
| 14–20 September | 43.75% |
| 21–27 September | 45.00% |
| 28 September – 4 October | 46.25% |
| 5–11 October | 48.00% |
Source: DHL Express Nigeria surcharges page, accessed September 2026. The rate follows US Gulf Coast jet fuel prices and changes weekly.
At 46.25%, a base transport charge of ₦100,000 would carry ₦46,250 in fuel surcharge. That is why a quote from a month ago may not match today’s.
Step 4: check for extra surcharges
| Surcharge | Amount (international) |
|---|---|
| Remote area delivery | ₦20,000 or ₦880 per kg, if higher |
| Address correction | ₦10,400 per shipment |
| Oversize piece | ₦35,310 per piece |
| Overweight piece | ₦120,000 per piece |
| Lithium batteries packed with equipment | ₦8,800 per shipment |
| Full dangerous goods | ₦176,500 per shipment |

Step 5: allow for US import duties and taxes
DHL states that import duties, taxes and other government charges in the destination country are not included in its shipping rate. Duties are normally paid by the importer (your receiver in the USA), unless you choose a billing option where you pay them. US import rules have changed often in recent years, so check the current position with US Customs and Border Protection or with DHL before sending goods of any value.
To avoid delays at US customs, DHL advises a commercial or proforma invoice with a clear description of the goods, accurate values, country of origin and tariff code.
What people commonly ship to the USA, and what to watch
- Documents (school transcripts, legal papers): light, so usually charged on actual weight. Use a flyer, not a box.
- Clothing and fabrics: vacuum-pack or roll tightly to cut volumetric weight.
- Foodstuff: some food items may be restricted on entry to the USA; check before you pack, and label everything clearly.
- Electronics: batteries attract rules and possible surcharges.
- Money: never send cash; see can you send money in a DHL package from Nigeria.
Cheaper options for heavy or non-urgent shipments
Express courier is fastest but priciest for heavy loads. For large volumes, compare air cargo or sea freight. Our guide to how long shipping from Nigeria to the USA by sea takes explains the trade-off, and Travo’s international shipping page covers other routes. If you are buying from American stores instead, a US shipping address is another option worth comparing.
