Cars accepted for UberX in Nigeria
According to Uber’s Nigeria page, UberX needs:
- A 4-door sedan in good condition
- Seating for at least 4 passengers in addition to the driver
- Working windows and air conditioning
Uber does not name approved models for Nigeria. The cars below are common 4-door sedans that fit the published UberX rules when they are 2000 or newer and in good condition. This is not an official Uber list, and the final decision rests with Uber’s inspection.

What about Uber Comfort, UberXL and Uber Black?
Uber’s Nigeria vehicle requirements page sets out rules for UberX and Uber Package only. It does not list separate requirements for Comfort, XL or Black. Which products are available, and what they require, can differ by city and change over time. Check the options the Uber driver app offers you after sign-up, or ask Uber support. Cars not accepted by Uber Nigeria
Uber’s page rules out the following for UberX:
- Full-sized vans or trucks
- Taxi cabs, government cars or other marked vehicles
- Salvaged or rebuilt vehicles
- By the general rules, any car older than model year 2000, any 2-door car and any car with visible body damage
Be especially careful when buying a Tokunbo or locally used car. A car with a salvage history, or one that has been heavily rebuilt after an accident, can be rejected even if it looks fine.
Uber Package: bikes and bicycles
Uber also lists requirements for deliveries. A motorcycle for Uber Package needs a rider card and either a NIN or a motorcycle licence for the driver, plus insurance and a Hackney permit for the vehicle and a NIPOST fleet document. - Check your car against the rules above: 2000 or newer, four doors, good condition, working AC, windows and radio.
- Gather your vehicle papers: inspection report, insurance, roadworthiness certificate and Hackney permit.
- Sign up in the Uber Driver app or on Uber’s Nigeria requirements page and upload your documents.
- Complete Uber’s vehicle inspection and any onboarding steps it asks for.
- Wait for approval, then go online in Lagos or Abuja.

Choosing a car that pays for itself
- Fuel economy matters most. Smaller-engine sedans usually cost less to run in Lagos traffic.
- Parts and mechanics: Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Kia parts are widely available in Nigeria.
- Air conditioning is required for UberX, so budget for a sound AC system.
- Newer is safer: the minimum is model year 2000, but a newer car will keep passing inspections for longer.
