If you need freight moved in Nigeria, choosing between a carrier, freight forwarder, broker, warehouse or third-party logistics provider depends on what you want that business to control. Start with the goods and the complete journey. Then identify who moves them, who arranges the movement, who handles documents and who receives them at each stage.

Carriers move the accepted load on an agreed transport leg

Carrier typeCore enquiryConnected work to clarify
Carrier trucking companyGoods, truck configuration, collection and delivery locations, date and access.Loading, unloading, waiting, equipment and final receiving arrangements.
Carrier shipping lineAccepted sea cargo, origin/destination ports and proposed transport terms.Inland collection, customs, terminal items and destination delivery.
Carrier air cargoContents, packed weight and dimensions, route and acceptance requirements.Airport handling, documentation and collection/delivery outside the airport.
Carrier railAccepted freight, origin/destination terminals and proposed service.Road connections, terminal handling and the receiving operation.

A passenger train operator is a different role from a freight rail carrier. Do not infer freight acceptance, terminal access or a particular route from a passenger timetable. Likewise, a trucking company that moves general cartons may not accept a temperature-sensitive or hazardous consignment. Obtain acceptance for the actual goods before booking connected services.

What a freight forwarder or broker should make clear

A freight forwarder can arrange an agreed combination of transport and shipment coordination. Ask which legs, documents, handling activities and third parties are included. If the forwarder offers door-to-door service, define the actual collection and delivery addresses and the items excluded from the price. “Door” should not conceal a terminal pickup or an unloading obligation you did not expect.

The word broker is incomplete without the activity. A freight intermediary, customs representative and insurance broker have different roles and checks. Ask the provider to identify the business entity and its actual responsibility. For relevant freight-forwarding credentials, CRFFN’s practitioner information is an official starting point; it should not be used as evidence of authorisation for an unrelated service.

Customs brokerage is a defined representation scope

Confirm who will represent you, what information is required and which activities the quote covers. Check the appropriate current credentials through the Nigeria Customs Service and the provider’s verifiable official details. Keep duty, terminal charges, brokerage and onward transport identifiable rather than assuming one headline figure includes them all.

A customs broker does not control every authority’s decision or guarantee release by an arbitrary deadline. Ask how a query, inspection or missing document is handled and who authorises any extra work. Read the Travo customs-clearance guide to prepare the cargo and document enquiry.

Warehouse provider or a complete 3PL service?

A warehouse provider may supply storage and specified handling. A 3PL contract may combine receiving, storage, inventory management, picking, packing, dispatch and returns, but only the agreed functions are included. Request the stock records, receiving evidence, discrepancy procedure and reporting you need. Check whether delivery is performed by the same business or another operator.

For ecommerce stock, specify SKU count, typical order volumes, packaging, dispatch cutoffs, returns and any controlled-storage requirement. Compare the 3PL warehousing guide and Travo warehouse fulfilment service. A pallet-space rate is not the complete cost of an order-fulfilment operation.

Intermodal operators, drayage and the handover between modes

An intermodal arrangement links transport modes through defined terminals and transfers. A drayage provider handles an agreed local freight leg, often connected to a port, rail terminal or warehouse. State the actual collection release point, equipment, container or load details, return obligations where relevant and the final receiving location.

Agree who books terminal appointments, who confirms that the load is ready and who pays for waiting or an unsuccessful collection. Record each handover and the person who can approve a changed destination or extra leg. A good plan avoids having a truck arrive while the warehouse is closed or a cargo-release condition is still unresolved.

Specialist freight and cargo-support vendors

A cold-chain provider needs the particular product, required conditions, monitoring and acceptance criteria. A hazardous-material specialist needs the accurate contents and relevant supporting information before assessing acceptance and handling. Do not book a generic carrier and disclose a specialist requirement only when the vehicle arrives. The actual operator must confirm the arrangement.

A packing/crating service, pallet provider and label or packaging-material supplier need the journey, goods, dimensions and required specification. A cargo inspector needs a defined inspection scope, report and limitation. An inspection report is not a substitute for carrier acceptance or an authority’s decision. A bulk material handler needs the site, material, quantity basis and equipment responsibility made explicit.

Ask Travo about a freight or 3PL requirement in Lagos

Tell us whether you need one transport leg or a coordinated shipment involving storage, handling, customs support and final delivery. We can discuss the appropriate service and define the provider responsibilities before a booking is accepted. Send Travo your Lagos vendor or service enquiry with the job, locations, dates, volumes and required outcome. We can discuss relevant services and coordination, then confirm the actual provider, availability, responsibilities and quote before booking.

Travo’s service catalogue includes vendor onboarding, business delivery, storage, transport, utilities and related support. A vendor category does not mean every supplier is listed, available or owned by Travo.

Start with international shipping, haulage and truck hire or business delivery. For the complete set of roles, use the 47 vendor-type guide.

Worked freight example: port, warehouse and final delivery

Suppose a business wants imported cartons moved from a Lagos port into storage and then delivered to several customers. Start by identifying whether the enquiry is for the international carrier, the complete forwarding arrangement, customs representation or the domestic distribution stages. Those are related jobs but their prices, documents and responsibilities differ.

StageResponsibility to identifyAcceptance record to agree
International carriageShipping line or air carrier and the booking partyTransport document and accepted shipment reference.
Release and short road movementResponsible clearance party and drayage or trucking providerRelease status, collection authority and handover record.
Warehouse receivingWarehouse or 3PL receiving teamCount, condition, discrepancies and inventory entry.
Customer distributionFulfilment team and last-mile delivery providerPicking record, delivery proof and exception report.

Ask whether a quotation covers the same stages as the alternatives you are comparing. A warehouse-only price may exclude receiving, stock counts, picking and onward delivery. A carrier quote can end at a terminal while a forwarder proposes a broader journey. The key question is where the accepted responsibility begins and ends, including who contacts you when a stage cannot proceed.

Specialist vendors: define the cargo before asking for equipment

A cold chain provider needs the product’s agreed handling and temperature requirements, monitoring expectations and handover plan. A hazardous material specialist needs accurate cargo information and must confirm classification, acceptance and the applicable process. A pallet, label or packaging supplier needs the load, handling and destination specification. Do not order generic equipment first and assume it will make every cargo acceptable.

For large or unusual loads, compare project cargo planning with the actual lifting, sea-carriage and road-delivery needs. For shared containers, read cargo consolidation and supplier planning. If a container freight station is involved, use the CFS handling and release guide to identify the collection stage.

Carrier rail and intermodal operator are different enquiries

A rail cargo enquiry must establish the actual origin and receiving terminal, accepted commodity, load specification and onward movement. An intermodal coordinator manages an agreed chain across transport modes. Neither label establishes a current route or timetable. Ask the supplier to identify the confirmed operating leg and how cargo transfers between modes, including storage, loading and documentation exclusions.
