Choosing the right seat can make a big difference to your flying experience, especially when travelling from Nigeria to destinations like London, Dubai, Accra, or Abuja. Knowing how to choose best seats on plane helps you avoid unnecessary discomfort, enjoy better legroom, and settle into your journey without stress.
Whether you’re booking a short domestic flight or travelling internationally, your seat location affects how comfortable the journey feels.
Window or Aisle Seat Which Is Better?
Window seats are popular among passengers who enjoy watching the scenery or sleeping without interruptions. They’re particularly convenient on longer flights where you prefer resting against the cabin wall.
Aisle seats offer easier access to the toilet and more freedom to move around. They’re often preferred by business travellers who want to stretch their legs without disturbing other passengers.
Middle seats are generally less desirable because you’re seated between two passengers. However, they may be unavoidable when booking late or travelling during busy periods.
Choose Best Seats on Plane Based on Your Journey
Your flight duration should influence your seat selection.
For short domestic routes such as Lagos to Abuja or Abuja to Port Harcourt, a standard economy seat is usually sufficient. Since these flights typically last around one hour, paying extra for additional legroom may not be necessary.
For international flights lasting six hours or longer, comfort becomes more important.
Consider these options:
- Extra-legroom seats: Suitable for taller passengers who need additional space.
- Exit-row seats: Often provide more legroom but come with safety eligibility requirements.
- Front cabin seats: Convenient for passengers hoping to disembark earlier.
- Window seats: Suitable for sleeping and enjoying uninterrupted rest.
- Aisle seats: Better for passengers who frequently need to stand or move around.
Remember that aircraft layouts differ, so check the airline’s seat map before making payment.
Where to Sit When Travelling With Children
Families flying from Lagos to London or Accra should consider sitting together rather than choosing seats individually.
Children may need assistance during meals, takeoff, or landing. Having an adult seated beside them makes the journey easier.
Some airlines offer bassinets on selected international flights, usually near bulkhead rows. These spaces are limited and should be requested early.
Avoid assuming that booking tickets together automatically guarantees adjacent seats. Confirm the airline’s family seating arrangements before departure.
How Much Does Seat Selection Cost?
Seat selection charges depend on the airline, aircraft, route, and ticket category.
Some airlines allow passengers to select standard seats without additional payment, while others charge for advance selection.
Extra-legroom seats, preferred front rows, and certain window or aisle positions may attract higher fees.
Before paying, check whether your ticket already includes seat selection. A more expensive fare may sometimes offer better overall value when baggage and seating are included.
When Should You Select Your Flight Seat?
The best time to choose your seat is during booking, especially when travelling with family or during busy periods.
Flights around Christmas, Easter, and major Nigerian holidays often experience increased demand.
Waiting until online check-in opens may leave fewer desirable seats available.
If you have already purchased your ticket, check whether your airline allows seat changes through its booking management system.
