If you want to pay car tax online or update your driving licence in Britain, begin with the relevant GOV.UK service. Vehicle tax, a driving licence, a vehicle log book and insurance are separate records. Updating one does not automatically complete the others.
This guide is for UK administrative checks, including Nigerian travellers and residents planning to drive there. For Nigerian licensing, use the Nigeria driving-school and licence guidance and the issuing authority’s requirements. Country rules should not be mixed.
Tax my vehicle online: the official starting point
Use GOV.UK Tax your vehicle. The service explains which reference is needed from a reminder, V5C log book in your name or the new-keeper slip. It offers debit or credit card payment and Direct Debit where applicable. Read the current instructions for the actual vehicle and circumstances.
Check that you are on the official service before entering payment information. A search advertisement or third-party page may charge for assistance. Keep the payment confirmation and check whether the vehicle also meets its insurance and MOT obligations before driving.
Use the official vehicle tax status checker for a status enquiry. A valid tax record does not prove that the driver is insured. Likewise, paying insurance does not tax the vehicle.
Update driving licence address
DVLA’s online address-change guide applies to full and provisional licences and states that an address-only change is free. Read its eligibility and identity instructions. Northern Ireland has a separate process, and changing a name or photo may involve different steps.
The DVLA change-of-address checklist also covers the vehicle log book, tax Direct Debit and other relevant records. Work through each item applicable to you. Inform your insurer through its own process and confirm that cover remains appropriate for the vehicle’s location and use.
If you are moving abroad, check the licence authority in the new country rather than assuming a British licence can simply display any overseas address. Keep copies of the confirmations and review outstanding reminders so important correspondence reaches you.
Driving licence categories and motorbike licence
Use the official category guide to understand what each entitlement covers, then check the actual categories and restrictions on your record. An entitlement to drive a car is not a general permission to ride every motorcycle or drive any commercial vehicle.
For a motorbike licence, start with the motorcycle and moped testing guide and follow its linked training and eligibility information. The relevant route depends on age, existing entitlement and the motorcycle category. Do not buy a bike on the assumption that its engine size alone tells you which licence you need.
For an international driving licence enquiry, establish whether you mean an International Driving Permit. Confirm the destination’s rules and the authority permitted to issue the document for your underlying licence. A permit is not a replacement for a valid domestic entitlement. Our UK driving and traveller guide links to further official checks.
Vehicle insurance check
Read GOV.UK’s insurance guidance and use the insurer’s current policy documents to confirm the named driver, vehicle, permitted use and start time. A database status or another person’s policy does not by itself establish that you may drive this vehicle for this journey.
Tell the insurer about relevant changes and ask for confirmation where unclear. For temporary, learner and young-driver cover, see our UK insurance comparison checklist. A breakdown membership is another product and should not be mistaken for motor insurance.
Car number plates and ghost plates
Use the UK number-plate rules when choosing a supplier or replacement plate. Confirm the legitimate registration and required documents, correct display and applicable markings. Custom appearance is not permission to alter legibility or registration characters.
The UK government’s illegal-plate enforcement notice identifies camera-evading ghost plates as an enforcement concern. Avoid products sold on the promise that cameras cannot read the registration. If a vehicle appears to have been cloned or you receive a notice for a vehicle you do not recognise, use the official reporting or dispute route rather than altering your own plate.
Service history check before buying
The official MOT history checker provides inspection records; it is not a complete service history. Ask for workshop invoices, dated servicing records, mileage and the work actually completed. Check permission and available records with the servicing provider where appropriate.
Distinguish an oil-change entry from a timing-belt replacement or other major work. A stamped book without supporting details should not be treated as evidence that every scheduled item has been done. Identify the exact model and engine before applying a maintenance schedule.
