Reviewed 7 October 2026. Confirm current vessel availability, routes, operating conditions and quotations with the responsible provider before booking.
A business searching for a tug company in Lagos may need assistance berthing a ship, moving a barge, repositioning a vessel or arranging a longer planned tow. These requests are not interchangeable. The vessel’s condition, location and the intended operation determine the assessment and quote.
This guide helps you prepare a marine towing enquiry in Nigeria, distinguish harbour services and identify the information needed before a provider can accept the job. It is a coordination guide, not instructions for carrying out a tow.
Ship tow services, pilotage and mooring are different
The Nigerian Ports Authority harbour-services page lists pilotage, towage, berthing or mooring, communications and service boats. A ship movement may require several coordinated services. Ask the port and your appointed shipping agent which apply to the vessel and operation.
| Service | Question for the coordinator |
|---|---|
| Harbour towage | What tug assistance is required for the intended movement? |
| Pilotage | Who confirms the pilot and movement arrangements? |
| Berthing or mooring | Is the berth ready and are the receiving teams arranged? |
| Barge tow | Has the barge, cargo and propulsion arrangement been assessed? |
| Longer coastal tow | Who develops and approves the route and tow plan? |
Booking a tug does not automatically secure a berth, pilot or movement permission. A quote should identify the scope and who coordinates the other parties.
Prepare the vessel information
Give the vessel name and identification, dimensions, draft, current location and destination. State whether it has working propulsion and steering, whether cargo is aboard and whether there is damage or another limitation affecting movement. For a barge, provide the load and loading condition assessed by the relevant personnel.
Send verified information and recent documents requested by the operator. Do not describe a disabled or damaged vessel as a routine tow. The provider needs to understand the condition before determining whether it can accept the job and what further assessment is needed.
How to choose a tug company in Lagos
Ask for the proposed operating provider and tug identification. Establish who will assess the tug’s capability for the vessel, route and conditions. Relevant performance, equipment, crew and operating documents should be checked by competent personnel rather than selected from a photograph or a general horsepower claim.
For a harbour operation, use the responsible port and shipping agent to confirm the permitted arrangements. An online advertisement for a tug is not proof of authorised access or an accepted movement slot. For a commercial vessel charter, the charter booking guide explains how to separate a provider’s quote from a confirmed arrangement.
The tow plan comes before a guaranteed departure
Identify the party responsible for the technical plan, route assessment and communications. Agree the roles of the vessel, tug, agent and receiving facility. Confirm any surveys, documentation and permissions required for the particular tow.
The operating team must decide whether conditions allow movement. Weather, vessel condition and berth readiness can affect the schedule. A deadline in a customer’s purchase order does not make a proposed tow ready to proceed.
Harbour services in Lagos: coordinate the receiving end
Confirm the berth or waterfront destination, receiving contact and readiness before the planned movement. Ask who communicates with port control and who arranges lines or other shore-side requirements. Record the operational contact and the process for a change of plan.
For cargo barges, the NPA barge-operations resources include assessment and minimum-safety-checklist materials. Use our barge cargo planning guide to connect tug arrangements with loading, discharge and final delivery.
Understand the towing quote
- Mobilisation and demobilisation
- Quoted operation, duration and geographic limits
- Tug, crew, fuel and equipment included
- Standby, waiting and extension charges
- Port, pilot or other separately arranged services
- Insurance scope, liabilities and cancellation terms
Ask when chargeable time starts and when the operation is considered complete. A per-movement harbour quote and a day-rate coastal charter should not be compared without the same scope. Clarify what happens if the vessel is not ready or the receiving berth changes.
Planned towing and urgent assistance
If a vessel is in distress, the master or responsible team should use the established emergency-reporting and authority channels for the operating area. A routine website enquiry is not an emergency response service. Report the vessel’s actual condition to the relevant operator and authority.
For planned operations, allow time for the assessment and confirmations. Keep written records of the accepted scope and any changes. Our offshore project logistics guide covers related working-vessel enquiries, and the marine logistics hub explains the connected shore-side stages.
How Travo can help with the enquiry
Travo’s marine transport guidance describes coordination with suitable providers. Send the vessel details, locations, intended task and dates through Travo’s contact page. Ask which elements can be coordinated and obtain explicit operating-provider confirmation.
Travo logistics coordination should not be treated as ownership of a tug fleet, technical tow approval or a guaranteed harbour movement. Agree the operator, quote and responsible parties before mobilisation.
Marine towing questions
Is tug hire the same as pilotage?
No. Ask the port and agent which services the particular movement needs and who arranges each one.
Can I choose a tug solely by price or horsepower?
The competent operating team must assess suitability for the vessel and tow. Compare accepted technical scope as well as cost.
Are harbour and coastal tow prices the same?
No universal rate is provided here. The quote depends on the operation, vessels, duration and responsibilities.
