Animal transport costs in Nigeria vary widely depending on the type of animal, distance, number of animals, vehicle required and level of handling involved.
Moving a dog across Lagos is completely different from transporting 20 goats between states or moving a truckload of cattle from Northern Nigeria to Lagos. For this reason, there is no single price that applies to every animal transport journey.
What Is the Average Cost of Animal Transport in Nigeria?
For pet transportation, current Nigerian providers advertise domestic journeys ranging from tens of thousands of naira for some local movements to several hundred thousand naira for longer interstate journeys. One Nigerian pet logistics provider currently gives an estimated range of ₦57,000 to ₦81,000 for a medium-sized pet travelling between Lagos Island and the Mainland, while its pricing varies according to route, pet size and additional services. Livestock transportation can cost substantially more because larger vehicles and specialist handling are required.
For example, livestock traders in Lagos reported in May 2026 that transporting truckloads of rams from Northern Nigeria to Lagos had increased from about ₦600,000 to ₦700,000 previously to as much as ₦1.2 million because of higher fuel and road-related costs. (News Agency of Nigeria)
A 2025 report also quoted a trader who said transporting 25 cows from Northern Nigeria to Lagos could cost about ₦2 million at the time. (Channels TV)
These figures are examples of reported market prices, not fixed national rates.
What Determines Animal Transport Cost?
The main factors affecting the price include:
- Type of animal
- Number of animals
- Animal size and weight
- Pickup location
- Delivery location
- Distance
- Vehicle type
- Fuel and road expenses
- Loading and unloading
- Driver and handler charges
- Veterinary requirements
- Travel date
- Waiting time
- Special handling requirements
- One-way or return journey
A transporter needs these details before providing a realistic quotation.
Pet Transport Costs in Nigeria
Dogs, cats and other domestic pets can generally require smaller vehicles or secure crates rather than livestock trucks.
The price can depend on whether the pet is travelling within Lagos, between Nigerian cities or internationally.
For example, transporting a dog from Lagos to Abuja can involve road or domestic air transportation, with the dog’s size, route, travel date, crate requirements and additional services affecting the final price. (Travo Blog)
Door-to-door collection and delivery can also affect the quotation.
Livestock Transport Costs in Nigeria
Cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and other livestock require different transportation arrangements from household pets.
The number of animals and size of the livestock truck can have a major effect on the total cost. Long-distance livestock movement also involves fuel, driver time, loading, unloading and potentially veterinary documentation.
For example, transporting 50 goats from Kano to Lagos should not be priced in the same way as moving five goats between nearby farms.
Why Long-Distance Animal Transport Costs More
Distance is one of the biggest factors in animal transportation.
A long journey requires more fuel and driver time and can involve traffic, poor road sections, delays and additional animal-care arrangements.
Animals travelling for longer periods may also require appropriate arrangements for water, feeding, rest and monitoring.
This is particularly important when moving livestock between Northern and Southern Nigeria.
Does the Number of Animals Affect the Price?
Yes.
Transporting one animal does not necessarily mean paying a simple fraction of the cost of a full vehicle.
A transporter may need to dedicate a suitable vehicle and driver to the journey regardless of whether it is carrying one animal or a larger consignment.
For larger consignments, the cost can instead be calculated around the vehicle and its capacity.
Tell the transporter the exact number of animals before requesting a quote.
Does the Type of Vehicle Affect the Price?
It can make a significant difference.
A small pet may travel in an appropriately secured vehicle or carrier, while cattle and other livestock require suitable livestock transportation.
The vehicle should provide appropriate space, ventilation and security for the animals being transported.
For specialist animals such as horses, larger pets or unusual species, additional equipment and experienced handlers may also be required.
Veterinary and Documentation Costs
Depending on the animal and route, veterinary checks and movement documentation may form part of the overall transportation budget.
For livestock movements, confirm applicable veterinary and movement requirements before the animals are loaded.
International animal transportation involves additional requirements. Nigeria’s Agricultural Quarantine Service carries out veterinary health inspection and quarantine functions for live animal imports and exports.
These requirements can add to the overall cost when an animal is being moved outside Nigeria.
What Other Costs Should You Budget For?
The transportation fee may not be the only expense.
Depending on the journey, you may also need to consider:
- Loading and unloading
- Animal handlers
- Travel crates
- Veterinary visits
- Health certificates
- Movement documentation
- Feeding and watering
- Temporary boarding or holding
- Airport handling
- Waiting time
- Additional pickup or delivery stops
Always ask what is included in the quotation before confirming the journey.
How to Get an Accurate Animal Transport Quote
Instead of asking only, “How much does animal transport cost in Nigeria?”, provide the details of the actual journey.
You should give the transporter:
- Type of animal
- Number of animals
- Approximate size or weight
- Pickup location
- Destination
- Preferred travel date
- Road or air preference where applicable
- Loading requirements
- Any veterinary documents already available
- Special handling requirements
For example, “I need to transport 10 goats from Kaduna to Lagos” provides much more useful information than simply asking for the price of animal transport.
How to Keep Animal Transport Costs Under Control
Planning ahead can help prevent unnecessary expenses.
Have the animals ready before the transporter arrives, prepare applicable documentation and make sure the receiving location is available at the expected delivery time.
For larger consignments, compare quotations based on the same requirements. One provider may include loading and unloading while another may charge separately.
Do not choose a vehicle solely because it has the lowest price. The transport arrangement should be suitable for the type and number of animals being moved.

Get a Route-Specific Animal Transport Price
So, how much does animal transport cost in Nigeria?
The answer depends on the animal and the journey. Local pet transportation can start in the tens of thousands of naira, while long-distance livestock transportation can reach hundreds of thousands or more for larger consignments and full truck movements.
Rather than relying on a general price, request a quotation based on your exact animal, route, number of animals and required services. This gives you a much clearer idea of the total cost before the journey begins.
