Quick answer

To calculate fuel consumption, divide the litres you used by the kilometres you drove and multiply by 100: litres ÷ km × 100 = L/100 km. To cost a trip, multiply the distance by your L/100 km, divide by 100, then multiply by the pump price. Example: a 435 km trip in a car that uses 10 L/100 km needs about 43.5 litres, which is roughly ₦59,600 at the ₦1,370 per litre NNPC Lagos price of 28 September 2026.

With petrol above ₦1,300 a litre across Nigeria, knowing what your car actually burns is the difference between a trip that fits the budget and one that does not. This guide gives you the formulas, a simple way to measure your own car, ready-made cost tables for common distances, and the habits that cut consumption. No app is needed: a pen, your trip meter and a fuel receipt are enough.

The three formulas you need

What you want Formula Example
Fuel consumption (L/100 km) litres used ÷ km driven × 100 40 L ÷ 400 km × 100 = 10 L/100 km
Fuel economy (km per litre) km driven ÷ litres used 400 km ÷ 40 L = 10 km/L
Trip fuel cost (₦) km × (L/100 km) ÷ 100 × price per litre 300 km × 10 ÷ 100 × ₦1,300 = ₦39,000

Examples follow the worked figures in Travo’s fuel consumption calculator explainer. Lower L/100 km is better; higher km/L is better.

Converting from a foreign car review? Miles per US gallon equals 235.2 divided by L/100 km, so 10 L/100 km is about 23.5 US mpg. For UK (imperial) mpg, use 282 instead of 235.2, giving about 28.2 mpg.

How to measure your car’s real consumption

Manufacturer figures are measured in lab conditions. Lagos traffic, bad roads and air conditioning all push real use higher, so measure your own car with the full-tank method:

  1. Fill the tank until the pump clicks off. Reset your trip meter to zero.
  2. Drive normally for at least 200 to 300 km, or a full week of your usual routes.
  3. Fill up again at the same pump if you can, until it clicks off. Note the litres added.
  4. Divide the litres by the km on the trip meter and multiply by 100. That is your real L/100 km.
  5. Repeat two or three times and average the results. Do separate tests for city driving and highway trips; they will differ a lot.

Current fuel prices to plug in

Location / product Price per litre Date
Petrol, NNPC retail, Lagos ₦1,370 28 Sep 2026
Petrol, NNPC select stations, Abuja ₦1,405 28 Sep 2026
Petrol, other Abuja outlets (MRS, Ranoil, AA Rano, Empire) ₦1,395 – ₦1,430 28 Sep 2026
Petrol, NNPC Ogun / Delta / Kogi ₦1,390 / ₦1,400 / ₦1,420 24 Sep 2026
Petrol, NNPC Yobe (highest listed) ₦1,456 24 Sep 2026
Diesel (AGO), seven-day average ₦1,855.97 13 Sep 2026

Trip cost table at ₦1,370 per litre

Find the row for your distance and the column closest to your car’s consumption. Small saloons often sit near the left column; big SUVs and older vehicles in traffic near the right.

Distance 7 L/100 km 10 L/100 km 14 L/100 km
100 km (city errands for a week) ₦9,600 ₦13,700 ₦19,200
Lagos → Asaba (about 435 km) ₦41,700 ₦59,600 ₦83,400
Lagos → Abuja (about 695 km) ₦66,700 ₦95,200 ₦133,300

Worked by Travo using the formula above. Distances from Rome2rio (Lagos–Asaba 270.3 miles; Lagos–Abuja 431.7 miles), rounded. Double the figure for a return trip.

For long trips, compare the fuel figure with a bus ticket. One person driving from Lagos to Abuja in a mid-size car spends about ₦95,200 on fuel one way; published 2026 bus fares on that route are mostly in the ₦30,000 to ₦55,000 range (see our Lagos to Abuja by road guide). With three or four passengers sharing fuel, driving becomes competitive.

What makes consumption go up

  • Stop-start traffic and idling. An engine running in a Third Mainland Bridge queue burns fuel while covering no distance, which is why city L/100 km is always worse than highway.
  • High speed. Many cars are most efficient somewhere between about 40 and 90 km/h; above that, air resistance climbs quickly.
  • Air conditioning. The compressor draws power from the engine, especially on hot afternoons.
  • Under-inflated tyres. Soft tyres raise rolling resistance. Check pressures monthly, when the tyres are cold.
  • Extra weight and roof loads. Heavy boots, roof racks and towing all add to consumption.
  • Poor maintenance. Dirty air filters, worn plugs and old engine oil all waste fuel.
  • Fuel quality. Contaminated or adulterated fuel can hurt performance; buy from stations you trust.

How fleet operators use these numbers

For businesses running delivery vans, staff buses or generators, consumption tracking is a control tool, not just a budget tool:

  • Record litres and odometer readings at every fill for each vehicle.
  • Set a normal L/100 km band per vehicle and route; investigate anything well above it (leaks, faults, or fuel going missing).
  • Quote customers using real consumption and the current pump price, and revisit prices when fuel moves.
  • Plan routes to avoid peak-hour gridlock where you can.

If you run trucks, diesel prices matter more than petrol; see our truck price guide and haulage services.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel consumption per km?

Divide the litres used by the kilometres driven. For example, 40 litres over 400 km is 0.1 litres per km, which is the same as 10 L/100 km.

How much fuel does a car use per 100 km?

It varies by car, load and traffic. Measure yours with the full-tank method above. As a guide, the tables use 7, 10 and 14 L/100 km to show small, mid-size and thirsty vehicles.

How much petrol do I need from Lagos to Abuja?

About 69.5 litres one way for a car using 10 L/100 km over roughly 695 km, around ₦95,200 at ₦1,370 per litre.

How do I convert km per litre to litres per 100 km?

Divide 100 by the km/L figure. 12.5 km/L equals 8 L/100 km.

What is the petrol price in Nigeria now?

NNPC retail petrol was about ₦1,370 per litre in Lagos and ₦1,405 at select Abuja stations on 28 September 2026. Prices differ by state and marketer and change often.

Does using AC really increase fuel consumption?

Yes. The air-conditioning compressor is driven by the engine, so it adds to fuel use, most noticeably in slow city traffic.
