Fuel is now one of the biggest costs of any road trip, delivery run or fleet operation in Nigeria. Estimating it before you set off helps you budget, compare driving with a bus ticket, and price deliveries properly. This guide gives you a simple fuel calculator you can do on your phone, current 2026 pump prices, worked examples on popular routes, and tips to use less fuel.

The fuel cost formula

You need three numbers:

1. Distance (km). Use a map app or a route guide. Double it for a return trip.
2. Fuel efficiency (km per litre). This is how far your vehicle goes on one litre. If you know litres per 100 km instead, divide 100 by that number.
3. Fuel price (₦ per litre) at the stations you will use.

Litres needed = distance ÷ km per litre
Fuel cost = litres needed × price per litre

Example: a 239 km trip in a car doing 10 km per litre needs 23.9 litres. At ₦1,400 per litre, that costs about ₦33,500.

Worked examples: fuel cost on popular routes

One-way petrol cost at ₦1,400 per litre, using Rome2rio road distances:

Compare these costs with a bus ticket. For one traveller, a bus is usually cheaper on long routes. For three or four people sharing, a car can come close.

How to find your vehicle’s real fuel efficiency

Manufacturer figures are measured in test conditions, and Nigerian traffic, heat, air conditioning and loads all use more fuel. The most reliable way to find your real efficiency is the full-tank method:

1. Fill the tank to full and note the odometer reading.
2. Drive normally until the tank is at least half empty.
3. Fill up to full again, and note the litres added and the new odometer reading.
4. Divide the kilometres driven by the litres added. The result is your km per litre.

Repeat this a few times, once for city driving and once for highway trips, as the figures will differ.

What pushes your fuel cost up

• Traffic and idling. Hours in Lagos go-slow burn fuel without covering distance.
• Air conditioning and heavy loads or roof racks.
• Under-inflated tyres and poor servicing, such as dirty air filters or old spark plugs.
• Aggressive driving: hard acceleration, and high speeds on the expressway.
• Detours around bad roads or closures.
• Price differences between states and stations. Northern states were paying ₦1,410–₦1,456 at NNPC stations in September 2026, compared with ₦1,370–₦1,390 in Lagos, Rivers and Ogun.

Tips to spend less on fuel

• Plan trips to avoid peak traffic, and combine errands into one run.
• Check tyre pressure weekly, and service the vehicle on schedule.
• Drive smoothly and keep to a steady, moderate speed on highways.
• Remove unnecessary weight from the boot.
• Compare pump prices. MRS, NNPC and independent stations can differ by ₦20 or more per litre.
• For businesses, track litres used against kilometres driven for every vehicle, and investigate outliers.

Beyond fuel: the full cost of a road trip

Fuel is only part of the bill. For a realistic budget, add:

• Tolls and parking.
• Food, water and rest stops.
• Wear and tear on tyres, brakes and servicing.
• A driver’s fee, if you hire one.
• Accommodation on long routes where you should not drive at night.
