Why ships sail at 14 to 18 knots
Container ships were designed to cruise at around 27 knots. From 2007, rising fuel costs pushed carriers to adopt “slow steaming”, and Maersk Line introduced sailing at about 18 knots. Speeds below 18 knots are called “super slow steaming”, and ships on some routes have sailed at 14 to 16 knots. Slower sailing saves fuel and emissions but adds days to every voyage. That is why a crossing that looks like a week on a map takes two weeks or more at sea.
Why your cargo takes longer than the sailing time
- Port calls and transshipment: many services stop at other West African ports first, or move boxes onto a second vessel at a hub, before crossing the Atlantic.
- Waiting for the ship: sailings on a given service may be weekly or less frequent, and cargo must be at the terminal before the cut-off.
- Export processing in Nigeria: documentation, inspection and terminal handling at the Lagos ports can add days.
- US arrival: unloading, US Customs and Border Protection clearance and inland delivery all take time.
- Weather and congestion: Atlantic storms and busy ports add further delay.
For planning, allow several weeks from handing over your goods to collecting them in the US, and ask your forwarder for the current schedule of the specific service they will book.
