In practice, this means you can start a FedEx shipment online through FedEx Nigeria or in person at a Red Star Express / FedEx outlet. Packages can be up to 274 cm long, or 330 cm in length and girth combined. If you use your own packaging, FedEx charges by dimensional (volumetric) weight when that is higher than the actual weight, so a large, light box can cost more than you expect.
How a FedEx delivery works, step by step
1. Get a quote and choose a service
Use the rate tool on FedEx Nigeria or ask at a Red Star / FedEx counter. You will need the destination, the weight and the box dimensions. Because rates have been in US dollars since 1 August 2024, the naira amount you pay moves with the exchange rate.
2. Pack the shipment properly
Use a strong box, cushion the contents and seal every seam. FedEx provides free packaging supplies to Express account holders. Remove old labels and barcodes from reused boxes, because they can confuse the scanners.
3. Prepare the customs paperwork
Anything other than documents usually needs a commercial or pro forma invoice describing each item, its value and its purpose (gift, sample, sale and so on). Vague descriptions such as “items” or “goods” are a common cause of customs holds. Check the destination country’s import rules, and do not ship restricted items such as cash, liquids you cannot declare, or anything the destination bans.
4. Pickup or drop-off
You can schedule a pickup through FedEx (including the FedEx pickup app) or drop the parcel at a FedEx location found with the online locator.
