Overview: how UK visa costs work for Nigerians
The UK Home Office sets every visa fee in pounds sterling, and the same fee applies whether you apply in Lagos, Abuja or anywhere else outside the UK. What you actually pay in naira depends on the exchange rate your bank or card uses on the day you pay. Depending on the visa, the total cost can have up to four parts:
- The visa application fee. This depends on the visa type and, for long-term visitor visas, on how long the visa lasts.
- The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). Most study, work and family visas include it. Standard visitor visas do not.
- Optional faster-decision services. Priority costs £500 and super priority costs £1,000, where they are offered.
- Optional extras at the visa application centre. These are add-ons sold by the centre, not Home Office fees.
UK fees went up on 8 April 2026. Some websites still show the 2025 prices, such as £127 for a six-month visa. If a price looks low, check the date on the page.
1. UK visitor visa fees in 2026
Most Nigerians apply for a visitor visa, which covers tourism, visiting family, business meetings and short courses. The long-term visas let you visit again and again during their validity, but each stay is normally limited to six months.

Which visitor visa should you choose?
Every visa, whatever its length, is refused or granted on its merits. A 10-year visa costs more than eight times as much as a six-month one, and if the application is refused the fee is not refunded. Many first-time applicants pay for the six-month visa and only apply for a long-term visa once they have a history of complying with UK visa conditions. If you travel several times a year for business or family, a 2-year or 5-year visa can work out cheaper than repeated six-month applications.

3. UK study visa fees
From 8 April 2026, the Student visa and the Child Student visa each cost £558 (about ₦993,000), up from £524. Dependants who join a student pay the same application fee. On top of that, students and their dependants pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 for each year of the visa (about ₦1.38 million a year).

For work visas, the IHS is often a bigger cost than the application fee. On a 3-year Skilled Worker visa, the IHS alone is £3,105, about ₦5.5 million. Budget for it from the start.
5. UK settlement and family visa fees
From 8 April 2026, the fee for entry clearance on a route to settlement from outside the UK is £2,064 (about ₦3.67 million), up from £1,938. This is the fee that spouses and partners of British citizens or settled persons usually pay when they apply from Nigeria. Family visa applicants also pay the IHS at £1,035 a year. The exact fee depends on the route, so check the fee shown on your GOV.UK application before you pay.
6. Priority and super priority services
Where they are offered for your visa and location, the Home Office’s faster-decision services outside the UK cost:
- Priority visa service: £500 on top of the visa fee (about ₦890,000)
- Super priority visa service: £1,000 on top of the visa fee (about ₦1.78 million)
These services are not available for every visa or at every centre, and they can sell out. The application portal shows you what can be booked for your appointment. These fees are paid in addition to the visa fee, not instead of it, and paying for them does not make approval more likely.
Payment, exchange rates and hidden costs
- Pay only on GOV.UK. You pay the application fee and the IHS online during the official application. Never send visa fees to an agent’s personal account.
- Your bank’s exchange rate matters. The naira figures above use the CBN official rate. Nigerian bank card rates are usually higher, and some cards have low limits for foreign spending. Check your card’s limit before your appointment date.
- Extras at the visa centre are optional. The application centre may sell premium lounges, document scanning or courier return. None of these affects the decision.
- Refused applications are not refunded. Check that your bank statements, employment letter and travel history support your application before you pay for a long-term visa.
