How DHL calculates your shipping price
Your final DHL Express price is made up of four parts:
- Base rate. This depends on the destination (Canada) and the chargeable weight, and appears in the quote tool.
- Fuel surcharge. A percentage added on top, which changes every week.
- Other surcharges. These apply only when relevant, for example remote area, oversize, dangerous goods or elevated risk.
- Duties and taxes in Canada. The importer (your receiver) normally pays these, unless you choose to pay them yourself.
Chargeable weight: actual versus volumetric
Couriers charge for space as well as weight. DHL Express generally calculates volumetric weight as length × width × height in cm, divided by 5,000. You pay on whichever is higher: the actual weight or the volumetric weight.
Example: a box of 40 × 30 × 30 cm holding 4 kg of clothes has a volumetric weight of 36,000 ÷ 5,000 = 7.2 kg. You are billed on 7.2 kg (subject to DHL’s rounding), not 4 kg. A smaller box can save you real money.

In practice, if your base rate were ₦100,000 (a hypothetical figure), a 46.25% fuel surcharge would add ₦46,250 before any other surcharges. Fuel has been climbing week by week, so shipping sooner can be cheaper.
