Dog transport by road is a practical option for moving pets between cities and states in Nigeria. Whether you are relocating a family dog, sending a puppy to a new owner or moving a pet between Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano or another city, the journey should be arranged around the dog’s safety and comfort.
Interstate pet transport providers in Nigeria offer road transportation using prepared vehicles, with some services including trained handlers, scheduled rest stops, water and journey updates. (Zero3Logistics)
How Dog Transport by Road Works in Nigeria
A typical road transport arrangement starts with providing the dog’s details and the exact pickup and delivery locations.
You will normally need to provide:
- Dog’s breed and approximate weight
- Age and general health condition
- Pickup address
- Destination address
- Preferred travel date
- Owner’s contact details
- Recipient’s contact details
- Feeding or medication instructions
- Any behavioural or special handling requirements
The transporter can then determine the appropriate vehicle, crate and journey arrangement.
Preparing a Dog for Road Transport
A dog travelling between Nigerian cities should be secured in a suitable crate or carrier that allows adequate ventilation and enough room for the animal to remain comfortable.
For a longer journey, plan for water, monitoring and appropriate breaks. Existing animal-transport rules also specify precautions around crating, ventilation, food, water and attendance during transportation. (Darahwb)
Before departure, make sure your dog has identification details and that the transporter has any relevant veterinary records. If your dog is not accustomed to a crate, introduce it gradually before the travel date.
Long-Distance Dog Transport Across Nigeria
Long-distance journeys require more planning than short trips within a city. Road conditions, traffic, weather and the distance between the pickup and destination can all affect the journey.
Ask the transporter how often the dog will be checked, when water and rest breaks will occur, how the dog will be protected from excessive heat and how you will receive updates during the trip.
Avoid arrangements where the dog is simply placed in an ordinary vehicle without proper containment or supervision.
Popular Dog Transport Routes in Nigeria
Road pet transport can be arranged for routes such as:
- Lagos to Abuja
- Lagos to Ibadan
- Lagos to Port Harcourt
- Lagos to Benin City
- Abuja to Kaduna
- Abuja to Kano
- Enugu to Lagos
- Port Harcourt to Abuja
The actual availability, travel time and price will depend on the transporter and the specific route.
How Much Does Dog Transport by Road Cost in Nigeria?
There is no single nationwide price for road dog transport. The quote can depend on the distance, dog’s size and weight, pickup and delivery locations, travel date, crate requirements and whether door-to-door service is included.
For example, one Nigerian pet logistics provider currently lists Lagos-Abuja as an interstate road route but does not publish a fixed price for that route. Its pricing page says final prices depend on the route, pet size, date and additional services such as veterinary documentation or crate rental. (Zero3Logistics)
For this reason, provide the complete route and your dog’s details when requesting a quotation instead of relying on a general price.
Choosing a Dog Transport Service
Before booking, ask:
- Is the journey specifically designed for pets?
- Will a trained handler accompany the dog?
- Is the vehicle properly ventilated?
- Will the dog remain safely secured during transit?
- How often are rest and water breaks provided?
- Will you receive updates during the journey?
- Is door-to-door pickup and delivery available?
- What happens if the vehicle is delayed?
- Are veterinary documents required for your route?
A Lagos-based pet moving service such as Taiyelolu Pet Cargo and Services is one example of a local provider to investigate, but you should confirm its current route availability and terms before booking.
How Travo.ng Can Help With Dog Transport by Road in Nigeria
Travo.ng can help coordinate logistics for moving a dog between Nigerian cities. When making an enquiry, provide the dog’s size, pickup location, destination, preferred travel date and any special requirements.
This allows the transport arrangement to be planned around the dog’s needs and the practical requirements of the journey.
Planning a Safe Road Journey for Your Dog
Book the journey early enough to allow time for preparation and confirmation of the transport arrangements. Make sure the crate is appropriate, the dog is fit to travel, the recipient will be available at the destination and the transporter has accurate contact information.
For interstate travel, proper preparation and regular monitoring can make the difference between simply moving a dog and arranging a journey that is safer and more comfortable for the animal.
