Sourcing products from China can give Nigerian and African businesses access to manufacturers, wholesalers and a wide range of products at competitive prices. However, finding a supplier is only the first step. You also need to verify the supplier, confirm product quality, organise the purchase and choose the right shipping method.

A well-planned process helps you avoid buying unsuitable goods or discovering unexpected shipping costs after payment.

How Sourcing Products from China Works

The process usually begins by identifying exactly what you want to buy. This could be clothing, electronics, footwear, furniture, machinery, household products or other wholesale goods.

You can then search platforms such as Alibaba and 1688 or work directly with Chinese manufacturers and wholesalers.

Before placing a large order, compare suppliers based on:

  • Product specifications and quality
  • Minimum order quantity (MOQ)
  • Wholesale pricing
  • Production capacity
  • Packaging requirements
  • Supplier experience
  • Production and delivery timelines

Ordering a sample or arranging a product inspection can also help confirm that the goods match your requirements before committing to a larger shipment.

Buying From Multiple Suppliers

Many importers purchase different products from several suppliers. For example, a Nigerian wholesaler might source clothing from Guangzhou, electronics from Shenzhen and accessories from Yiwu.

Instead of shipping every order separately, the goods can be sent to a warehouse in China. The cargo can then be received, organised, checked and consolidated before international shipping.

This can make shipment management easier, although whether consolidation saves money depends on the cargo’s weight, volume, packaging and shipping method.

Choosing the Right Shipping Method

Once your goods are ready, choose between air and sea freight based on the shipment.

Air freight is generally useful for smaller, urgent or higher-value shipments where speed is important.

Sea freight is usually more suitable for heavy, bulky or larger commercial orders. LCL allows smaller shipments to share container space, while FCL gives one buyer a dedicated container.

The correct choice should consider both the physical size of the cargo and how quickly you need it.

Don’t Forget the Total Import Cost

The supplier’s product price is not your final cost. Your landed cost may include domestic transportation in China, warehouse handling, export documentation, international freight, destination charges, customs duties, taxes and delivery to your business location.

For Nigerian imports, product-specific requirements and documentation should also be checked before shipping, particularly for regulated products.

How Travo.ng Can Help

Travo.ng can help coordinate the logistics involved in sourcing and shipping products from China. Depending on your requirements, this can include coordinating supplier cargo, warehouse receiving, consolidation planning and arranging suitable air or sea freight.

Whether you are importing your first wholesale order or regularly purchasing from several Chinese suppliers, having the sourcing and shipping process planned together can make your supply chain easier to manage.

Before requesting shipping arrangements, prepare the product details, supplier locations, number of cartons, estimated weight or CBM and final destination. This gives you a clearer basis for choosing the appropriate shipping option.
