Finding the cheapest way to ship from China depends on what you are shipping, how much you have, where it is going, and how quickly you need it. For many importers, sea freight is the most economical option for larger or heavier cargo, while air freight can make more sense for small, lightweight, or urgent shipments.

If you buy from several suppliers, consolidating your orders at a China warehouse can also help reduce unnecessary shipping costs.

Use Sea Freight for Larger Cargo

Sea freight is generally the better choice when you have bulky or heavy goods and can wait longer for delivery. You can use LCL (Less than Container Load) when your cargo does not fill a container, allowing you to share container space with other shipments.

For larger volumes, FCL (Full Container Load) can provide better value per cubic metre.

Consolidate Orders from Multiple Suppliers

One of the easiest ways to reduce shipping expenses is to avoid sending every supplier’s order separately.

Instead, have your suppliers deliver the goods to one warehouse in China. The warehouse can receive, identify, inspect, and combine suitable packages into one shipment.

This is particularly useful when buying from Alibaba, 1688, Taobao, Yiwu suppliers, or several factories.

Choose Air Freight Carefully

Air freight is faster but usually costs more than sea freight. However, it can be economical for small, lightweight, high-value goods where waiting several weeks for sea freight does not make sense.

Always check both the actual and volumetric weight because bulky but lightweight packages may be charged according to their volume.

Compare the Total Shipping Cost

Do not choose a forwarder simply because they advertise the lowest rate per kilogram or cubic metre. Ask about the complete cost, including:

  • Supplier collection
  • China warehouse handling
  • Consolidation and repacking
  • Export documentation
  • International freight
  • Customs charges
  • Port or airport handling
  • Final delivery

A slightly higher freight rate can sometimes result in a cheaper overall shipment if more services are included.

Avoid Unnecessary Packaging

Packaging can increase the volume of your cargo, especially with products that arrive in oversized cartons. Where appropriate, a warehouse can repack multiple orders into more efficient cartons before shipping.

However, products that need additional protection should not be over-compressed simply to reduce volume.

How Travo.ng Can Help

Travo.ng can help coordinate shipping from China by assisting with cargo consolidation, warehouse handling, freight planning, and delivery arrangements.

If you are buying from multiple suppliers, Travo.ng can help organize the shipment around your combined cargo instead of treating every supplier order as a separate international shipment.

For most importers, the cheapest approach is not simply choosing the lowest advertised rate. It is combining suitable orders, selecting the right freight method, controlling cargo volume, and understanding the full landed cost before shipping.
