If you search for a glass repair shop, glazier or window fitter near you, first state whether you mean a building window or a car window. The products and fitting methods are different. For property work, identify whether the problem is a cracked pane, damaged frame, faulty door, failed seal or another glazing fault. A photo can help route the enquiry, but final measurements and specification may require a site visit.
Broken window repair: make the area safe first
Keep people away from cracked, loose or fallen glass. Do not remove a large broken pane, climb to an unstable opening or lean against damaged glazing. If the damage follows a break-in, document it from a safe position and follow your insurer’s and the relevant authorities’ reporting requirements. Replace the glass or replace the whole window?
An intact, suitable frame may allow a glass-only replacement. A damaged frame, failed hardware or an unsuitable opening can require additional work. Ask the assessor to explain the condition of the pane, frame, seals, hinges and locking points before approving a full replacement. A quote for one pane is not a quote for a complete window system.

Choosing appropriate safety glass
Glass must be specified for its location and use. Toughened and laminated glass behave differently when damaged, and appearance alone is not a reliable specification. Ask the installer to record the proposed type, thickness and necessary performance requirements. For a balustrade, rooflight, fire-rated partition or other specialist assembly, request the relevant design and compatibility checks. Do not downgrade the specification simply to obtain the lowest price for a same-sized piece of glass.

The quote depends on measured dimensions, glass type, thickness, processing, frame condition, access and fitting work. Large, high-level or awkward panels can require additional handling arrangements. Ask whether removal, safe disposal, seals, hardware, access equipment and reinstatement are included. A per-square-metre material price cannot confirm the final installed cost by itself.
For several panes, provide a simple numbered list with the location and problem at each opening. Let the installer verify final dimensions before manufacture. Avoid ordering toughened or otherwise processed glass on an unverified measurement, as an incorrect panel may not be adjustable at the property.
