Flying home during school holidays or travelling abroad for university can be expensive, especially when you’re working with a student budget. Fortunately, student flight discounts can help reduce travel expenses when you know where to look and how to book.
Whether you’re studying in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, or outside Nigeria, finding affordable flights requires proper planning. Travo.ng helps students explore flight booking options, compare available fares, and arrange convenient travel without unnecessary complications.
Where Students Can Find Cheaper Flight Tickets
Not every airline advertises student discounts openly. Some offer special student fares, while others provide cheaper tickets through promotional sales or flexible booking arrangements.
Students travelling from Lagos to Abuja, for example, may find better prices when booking several weeks before departure instead of waiting until examination periods end.
International students travelling from Nigeria to the United Kingdom, Canada, or Ghana should also compare different airlines before making payments.
Some airlines offer student-specific benefits such as additional baggage allowances, flexible travel dates, or reduced change fees. However, eligibility and availability depend on the airline and route.
How to Qualify for Student Flight Discounts
Airlines offering student fares usually require proof that you’re currently enrolled in an educational institution.
Depending on the airline, you may need:
- A valid student identification card
- An admission or university enrollment letter
- A school-issued email address
- A valid international passport for overseas travel
- Proof of age where student fare restrictions apply
Some discounts are available only to full-time students or passengers within specific age brackets.
Before paying, confirm whether the discounted ticket includes checked baggage and whether changing your travel date attracts additional charges.
When to Book Student Flights in Nigeria
Timing can make a noticeable difference in ticket prices.
Flights between Lagos and Abuja often become more expensive around major holidays, festive periods, and busy travel weekends.
Students returning home for Christmas should begin checking fares well before December. Similarly, those travelling abroad for September university admissions should avoid leaving flight arrangements until the final weeks.
Booking early doesn’t guarantee the lowest fare, but it gives you more opportunities to compare prices.
Midweek departures may also be cheaper than weekend flights, depending on demand and airline availability.
Avoid These Mistakes When Booking Student Flights
A cheap ticket isn’t always the most affordable option.
Students sometimes choose the lowest advertised fare without checking baggage restrictions, airport locations, or cancellation conditions.
For international travel, confirm whether your ticket includes sufficient baggage for clothing, books, and personal belongings.
Also, check transit visa requirements before choosing connecting flights.
Another common mistake is booking flights before confirming admission dates, visa approvals, or school resumption schedules.
These errors can lead to expensive ticket changes.
