Nobody enjoys arriving at the airport only to spend unnecessary time standing in a check-in queue. Whether you’re flying from Lagos to Abuja or travelling internationally, online check in can make your airport experience much easier.
Instead of waiting until you reach the airline counter, you can confirm your flight details, select an available seat, and obtain your boarding pass before leaving home.
For Nigerian travellers dealing with Lagos traffic, early departures, and busy airport terminals, checking in ahead of time can save valuable time.
How Online Check In Works for Nigerian Flights
Online check in allows passengers to complete part of the airport check-in process through an airline’s website or mobile application.
Most airlines open online check-in between 24 and 48 hours before departure, although the exact window depends on the airline and route.
To complete the process:
- Visit your airline’s official website or mobile application.
- Select the online check-in option.
- Enter your booking reference and surname.
- Confirm your flight and passenger details.
- Choose an available seat if the airline permits it.
- Download or save your boarding pass.
Some airlines allow passengers to receive boarding passes through email.
Always confirm whether your departure airport accepts mobile boarding passes or requires a printed copy.
Checking In for Flights From Lagos and Abuja
Passengers departing from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos or Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja should complete check-in before travelling to the airport whenever possible.
For example, someone flying from Lekki to Abuja may encounter heavy traffic along the airport route. Completing check-in beforehand reduces the number of tasks left to handle after arrival.
However, checking in online does not mean you can arrive just before departure.
For domestic flights, arriving approximately two hours early is a sensible precaution. International passengers should generally allow three hours, subject to airline instructions.
Can You Check In Online With Luggage?
Yes. Passengers travelling with checked baggage can usually complete online check in.
However, you must still visit the airline’s baggage drop counter to submit your luggage.
Passengers carrying only approved cabin baggage may proceed towards security if their airline and airport permit it.
Always check baggage weight limits before travelling. Excess luggage charges can create unexpected expenses, especially during festive travel periods.
Common Online Check In Problems and How to Fix Them
Sometimes passengers cannot complete check-in despite having confirmed tickets.
Common reasons include:
- Entering an incorrect booking reference
- Using a surname that differs from the reservation
- Attempting check-in before the airline opens it
- Missing passport or travel document information
- Airline website or application errors
If the process fails, confirm your booking information and try again.
For international flights, some airlines require passengers to present passports, visas, or other documents at the airport before issuing boarding passes.
Never assume that a confirmed flight reservation automatically means check-in is complete.
