A long flight can feel much better when you have enough legroom, a comfortable seat, and space to relax. If you want to upgrade flight seat online, you can often arrange a better seat before reaching the airport, provided your airline offers upgrades and seats are available.
For travellers flying from Lagos or Abuja to destinations like London, Dubai, or Accra, upgrading can make a noticeable difference. Whether you want extra legroom or a move to business class, knowing how the process works helps you avoid unnecessary charges and last-minute disappointment.
How to Upgrade Flight Seat Online Before Departure
Most airlines allow passengers to request seat upgrades through their official websites or mobile applications.
Start by opening the airline’s booking management section. Enter your booking reference and surname to access your reservation.
Depending on the airline, you may see options to:
- Move from economy to premium economy.
- Upgrade from economy to business class.
- Select extra-legroom seats.
- Choose preferred window or aisle seats.
- Pay for available upgrades using cash or loyalty points.
After selecting your preferred option, review the additional cost and complete payment.
Some airlines also offer upgrade bidding, where passengers submit an amount they are willing to pay. However, submitting a bid does not guarantee approval.
What Does a Flight Seat Upgrade Cost in Nigeria?
The cost depends on your airline, destination, travel date, and available seats.
For example, upgrading to an extra-legroom economy seat may cost considerably less than moving to business class on a Lagos-to-London flight.
Airlines generally calculate upgrade prices based on factors such as ticket type, remaining seat inventory, and demand.
Travellers should also understand that paying for seat selection is different from upgrading cabin class.
A preferred economy seat may provide better positioning without including business-class meals, baggage allowances, or lounge access.
Always check exactly what your payment covers before confirming.
When Should You Request a Seat Upgrade?
Waiting until airport check-in can limit your choices, especially during busy travel periods.
Flights departing Nigeria often experience increased demand around Christmas, Easter, summer holidays, and major international events.
If you want to upgrade flight seat online, check availability soon after booking and again before departure.
Some airlines release additional upgrade opportunities closer to the travel date, although availability is never guaranteed.
For international flights departing Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos or Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, confirm your upgrade before travelling to the terminal.
This reduces the risk of arriving with an incorrect assumption about your assigned seat.
Common Mistakes That Can Affect Your Upgrade
Passengers sometimes pay additional charges without understanding the conditions attached.
Before upgrading, check whether:
- Your original ticket qualifies for cabin upgrades.
- The upgrade applies to every flight segment.
- Additional baggage allowances are included.
- Your payment is refundable if plans change.
- Your connecting flight has the same cabin arrangement.
For example, upgrading a Lagos-to-Dubai flight does not automatically mean your connecting flight to another destination will also be upgraded.
Review each flight separately.
