Travelling with more bags than your airline allows can quickly become expensive, especially when you discover the extra charges at the airport. Whether you are relocating, travelling for business, or returning from a shopping trip, extra luggage booking online helps you arrange additional baggage before departure.
For travellers flying from Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt, planning luggage requirements early can prevent unnecessary delays and unexpected expenses. Travo.ng helps travellers coordinate flight bookings and travel arrangements, making it easier to prepare for journeys involving additional baggage.
How Extra Luggage Booking Online Works
Most airlines allow passengers to purchase additional baggage through their websites or booking management platforms.
After booking your flight, check your ticket’s baggage allowance. Some economy tickets include checked luggage, while cheaper fares may only cover cabin baggage.
To arrange additional luggage:
- Check the baggage allowance on your ticket.
- Visit your airline’s official booking management page.
- Enter your booking reference and passenger details.
- Select the additional baggage weight or number of bags permitted.
- Complete payment and save your confirmation.
Airline policies differ. Some charge for additional kilograms, while others require passengers to purchase another checked bag.
What Extra Baggage Actually Costs in Nigeria
Additional baggage charges depend on the airline, destination, ticket category, and weight.
For example, someone travelling from Lagos to Abuja with two large suitcases may need to purchase additional baggage if their ticket covers only one checked bag.
International flights from Lagos to London, Dubai, or Accra may have different baggage rules and higher excess luggage charges.
Purchasing additional baggage online before departure can sometimes cost less than paying at the airport.
Always confirm the current price directly with your airline before making payment.
When Should You Book Additional Luggage?
The safest approach is to arrange extra baggage immediately after confirming your travel plans.
This is particularly important during December holidays, Easter travel, and other busy periods when airports experience increased passenger traffic.
Waiting until departure day creates unnecessary pressure, especially at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Passengers carrying business merchandise, wedding items, or relocation belongings should calculate their luggage requirements several days before travelling.
Remember that purchasing extra weight does not necessarily remove an airline’s maximum weight limit for individual bags.
Avoid These Common Baggage Booking Mistakes
Travellers sometimes pay unnecessary charges because they misunderstand their airline’s luggage policy.
Common mistakes include:
- Assuming every ticket includes checked baggage.
- Confusing cabin luggage allowances with checked baggage limits.
- Purchasing additional weight without checking individual bag restrictions.
- Forgetting that connecting flights may involve different baggage policies.
- Arriving at the airport without proof of additional baggage payment.
Weigh your luggage at home and confirm that your purchased allowance appears on your booking.
