Searching for the six most expensive cars in the world often produces lists that mix auction records, new-car launch prices and unconfirmed private commissions. Those are different measures. Here are six exceptionally expensive examples with prices documented by manufacturers or an auction house, with the date and basis explained.

Why the Mercedes sale stands apart
The 300 SLR figure concerns a historic collector vehicle and a specific transaction announced in 2022. It should not be compared with the advertised price of an ordinary new Mercedes model. Provenance, rarity and the circumstances of a sale are central to understanding collector-car prices.
One-offs and limited-production cars
La Voiture Noire and the Chiron Profilée are exceptional individual cars. The Centodieci, Codalunga and Divo examples concern small production series and documented launch or sale information. Their figures are historical records, not an offer to buy a car now at that price.

Ownership costs extend beyond the headline
For a rare or high-value vehicle, assess inspection, storage, insurance, servicing, parts access, transport and the applicable import requirements. A currency conversion alone ignores these costs. Establish who is responsible for each stage and the evidence required for handover.
Transport plans should account for ground clearance, loading points, dimensions, vehicle condition and suitable equipment. Confirm the carrier’s proposed method and insurance terms rather than assuming any tow truck or container arrangement is appropriate.
