Quick answer
The main Abuja postal code is 900001, the code of the Garki Main Head Post Office. Each district has its own six-digit code, though. Common ones are Central Business District 900211, Asokoro 900231, Maitama 900271, Wuse Zone 1 900281, Gwarinpa 900108 and Nyanya 900103. The other area councils have their own prefixes: Bwari and Kubwa 901101, Gwagwalada 902101, Kuje 903101, Kwali 904xxx and Abaji 905101. Codes we could not confirm in two or more sources are marked below.
Nigeria uses six-digit postal codes, and Abuja’s start with 9. In the FCT, the next two digits show the area council. AMAC is 900, Bwari 901, Gwagwalada 902, Kuje 903, Kwali 904 and Abaji 905. The last three digits narrow it down to a district or delivery area. Put the right code on a parcel, a bank form, a visa application or an online checkout and it is less likely to be delayed or bounced.
How Abuja postal codes work
Under the NIPOST system, the first digit of a postal code is the region. The first three digits together are the dispatch district, and the last three are the delivery location. Head post offices usually end in 001. That is why Garki Main HO, the FCT’s main post office, is 900001.
| Digits | Meaning | Example: 900271 (Maitama) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Postal region | 9: the region that covers the FCT |
| 1st to 3rd | Dispatch district (area council in the FCT) | 900: Abuja Municipal (AMAC) |
| 4th to 6th | Delivery location (district or town) | 271: Maitama |

Abuja postal codes by area council
The FCT has six area councils. Use this table if you only know which council an address falls under.
| Area council | Prefix | Main code(s) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abuja Municipal (AMAC): city centre, Garki, Wuse, Maitama, Asokoro, Gwarinpa, Lugbe, Nyanya, Karu | 900 | 900001 (Garki Main HO); districts 900101 to 900299 | Verified (HO code) |
| Bwari (includes Kubwa, Dutse, Bwari town) | 901 | 901101 | Verified |
| Gwagwalada | 902 | 902101 | Verified |
| Kuje | 903 | 903101 (Kuje); 903102 (Rubochi) | Directories agree |
| Kwali | 904 | 904105 (Kwali town); 904101 to 904109 by town | Directories agree |
| Abaji | 905 | 905101 (Abaji); 905102 (Yaba) | Mostly agree, but see note |
“Verified” means an encyclopaedic source or a NIPOST-derived database confirms the code. “Directories agree” means at least two independent postcode directories list the same code. Note: two directories print Abaji as 950101 and 950102. That clashes with the 905 pattern used by the other councils and by NIPOST-derived databases, so we list 905101. Ask the Abaji post office to confirm if it matters.
Abuja district postal codes (AMAC)
Most searches for “Abuja zip code” are about city districts. Here are the codes most addresses need. Where a district has several zones, use the zone the street is in.

| Garki Area 8 | 900245 | Directories agree |
| Garki Area 10 | 900246 | Directories agree |
| Garki Area 11 | 900247 | Directories agree |

| Gwarinpa | 900108 | Directories agree |
| Jabi, Utako, Life Camp | 900108 (reported) | Unverified: some directories group these with Gwarinpa |
| Lugbe (Airport Road) | 900107 | Directories agree; shares the Kabusa district code |
| Nyanya | 900103 | Directories agree |
| Karu | 900110 | Directories agree |

Kubwa, Bwari and other Bwari Area Council towns
Kubwa is in Bwari Area Council, not AMAC, so its code is 901101. A NIPOST-derived postcode database lists this code for Kubwa, and so do several directories. Other Bwari towns such as Dutse and Bwari town are commonly given the same code, 901101.
Outer AMAC villages and towns
| Town | Postal code |
|---|---|
| Karshi | 900101 |
| Jiwa | 900102 |
| Gui | 900105 |
| Gwagwa | 900106 |
| Kabusa | 900107 |
| Orozo | 900109 |
Source: Zipcode.com.ng and NigeriaPostalCodes.com agree on these codes. Not confirmed by NIPOST directly.
Kwali Area Council towns
Pai 904101, Dafa 904102, Yangoji 904103, Kilankwa 904104, Kwali 904105, Yebu 904106, Gumbo 904107, Ashara 904108 and Wako 904109. Two directories list the same codes.
How to find the exact postal code for your Abuja address
- Work out the district and area council. Your address should show the district, such as Wuse Zone 4, Garki Area 11 or Kubwa. If you only know the area council, use the main code from the council table.
- Match it in the tables above. If the code is marked “unverified”, use the district or council main code, or check before you send anything important.
- Ask your nearest post office. NIPOST’s Post Office Finder shows FCT branches, and counter staff can confirm the code for a street.
- When in doubt, use 900001. Many online forms only need a valid Abuja postal code, so the Garki HO code is accepted for any FCT address. The district code is still better for physical mail.
Do couriers need your Abuja postal code?
Local dispatch riders and most Nigerian couriers deliver by street address and phone number, so a missing code rarely stops a delivery inside Abuja. Postal codes matter more for:
- International shipping forms and foreign e-commerce checkouts, which often will not submit without a “ZIP code”
- Bank, embassy, visa and exam applications
- NIPOST registered mail, EMS and P.O. Box mail
Write the full address in this order: name, house number and street, district (for example Wuse Zone 5), Abuja, FCT, postal code, Nigeria. Always add a working phone number.
Sending a parcel in or out of Abuja?
Book a pickup and delivery on Travo. Use it for same-day dispatch inside the FCT, interstate parcels and haulage. Prices are shown before you confirm.
Common mistakes with Abuja postal codes
- Using 900001 for every district on official mail. It works on forms, but registered post is sorted faster with the district code.
- Putting Kubwa or Gwagwalada under 900. They are in separate area councils with prefixes 901 and 902.
- Copying codes from old lists without checking. Online lists disagree on Wuse II, the Three Arms Zone and some Garki areas, as flagged above.
- Confusing postal codes with phone codes. Abuja’s old landline area code (09) has nothing to do with its postal codes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the postal code of Abuja?
The main Abuja postal code is 900001, the Garki Main Head Post Office. Districts have their own codes, such as Maitama 900271, Asokoro 900231 and Central Business District 900211.
Is the Abuja zip code the same as the postal code?
Yes. Nigeria uses “postal code”, but foreign websites often ask for a “ZIP code”. Enter the same six-digit number, for example 900001.
What is the FCT postal code?
FCT codes start with 900 (AMAC), 901 (Bwari), 902 (Gwagwalada), 903 (Kuje), 904 (Kwali) or 905 (Abaji). 900001 is the territory’s main head post office code.
What is the postal code for Kubwa?
Kubwa’s code is 901101, the Bwari Area Council code. Kubwa is not in AMAC, so it does not start with 900.
What is the postal code for Garki and Wuse?
Garki Main HO is 900001, and the Garki areas run from 900241 to 900247. Wuse Zone 1 is 900281, and Zones 5 to 7 are 900285 to 900287. Sources disagree on Wuse II (900288 or 900299), so confirm that one at a post office.
What is the postal code for Lugbe and Nyanya?
Directories list Lugbe as 900107, the same as Kabusa, and Nyanya as 900103. Both are in AMAC.
Where can I confirm an Abuja postal code officially?
NIPOST has no public postcode search tool. Use its Post Office Finder to find the nearest FCT branch and ask at the counter. Garki Main Post Office is the head office for the territory.
