Starting a cold storage business in Nigeria requires more than buying a cold room. You need customers who will pay for the service, equipment matched to their products, dependable power, competent operators and a practical route from storage to market. A busy harvest area can still be a poor site if customers cannot reach it or the stored produce has no confirmed buyer.

This guide is for entrepreneurs, cooperatives and businesses assessing a cold-chain startup, investment or franchise proposal. It explains what to check before committing money and how to prepare a financing enquiry. It does not advertise a Travo franchise or promise a return on investment.

Choose a business model before choosing equipment

ModelWhat customers buyMain question
Shared farm or market cold roomStorage by an agreed unit and durationWill enough compatible produce arrive consistently?
Dedicated commercial cold storeContracted capacity for processors, distributors or retailersCan anchor customers support predictable utilisation?
Storage plus refrigerated distributionControlled storage and delivery handoffsCan routes, fleet and receiving sites preserve the required conditions?
Equipment lease or managed serviceAccess to cooling without outright ownershipWho maintains the system and carries downtime risk?
Franchise arrangementA contract to operate under a specific brand and systemIs there a genuine current offer with clear rights and obligations?

A cold chain business may combine models, but each adds operational duties. Do not assume storage income will automatically cover a refrigerated fleet or a packing line. Test each service against real customer demand.

Cold storage franchise Nigeria: what to verify

If you are offered a cold storage or cold chain franchise, request the identity of the franchisor, evidence of its rights, the proposed territory, fees and contract. Ask which equipment, training, brand access, software and marketing support are actually included.

Clarify who obtains premises approvals, pays electricity and repairs, owns customer relationships and handles product-loss claims. Check renewal, termination, exclusivity and resale provisions. Speak to existing operators independently where possible and have the agreement reviewed before payment.

A seller describing equipment as a “franchise package” has not necessarily supplied a franchise contract. Neither this article nor Travo’s logistics catalogue confirms that a particular franchise is available. Verify an offer directly with the named company.

Validate the location and customer demand

Interview farmers, traders, processors and buyers about product type, daily volume, storage duration, seasonal peaks and willingness to pay. Record how they currently lose time or quality and whether cooling solves that problem. Different crops and food products may be incompatible in one room.

Check access, drainage, security, loading space, electricity supply and the distance to collection points and buyers. A cheap site can become expensive if transport or power costs undermine demand. Obtain technical and regulatory advice before signing a long lease or ordering equipment.

Build a full cold-chain investment budget

Separate initial expenditure from operating costs. Initial items may include site works, insulation, refrigeration plant, electrical installation, backup power, monitoring, handling equipment and commissioning. Operating costs include energy, labour, maintenance, cleaning, insurance, communications, rent and replacement parts.

Include working capital for the months when demand is low or customers pay late. Ask suppliers about import exposure, warranty limitations, local spare parts and installation exclusions. A quotation for refrigeration equipment alone is not a complete cold storage startup budget.

Test a conservative scenario. Lower utilisation, higher energy costs and a repair interruption can occur together. A business case that works only at full occupancy has little room for operating problems.

Measure capacity and revenue consistently

Choose a billing unit that customers understand: pallet-days, crate-days, kilograms stored or dedicated monthly capacity. Define handling charges and what happens when customers collect late. Distinguish nominal room size from usable capacity after aisles and airflow clearances.

For an illustrative capacity calculation, 50 usable crate positions over 30 days provide 1,500 possible crate-days. At 60% occupancy, that is 900 occupied crate-days. Revenue depends on your actual agreed fee and collections; this example is not a Nigerian price quote or a profit forecast.

Compare expected collected revenue with all operating costs and debt payments. Document assumptions and test low-season demand. Use a qualified adviser for project-specific financing and tax decisions.

Cold chain financing and cold storage financing in Nigeria

Potential structures include owner equity, equipment leasing, commercial lending and relevant development-finance programmes. Availability and suitability depend on the applicant and project. Bank of Industry’s SME information is an official starting point for checking its financing and business-advisory routes. Confirm current eligibility, terms and application requirements directly.

Prepare a business plan, customer evidence, supplier quotations, operating-cost assumptions, ownership documents and the applicable approval plan. Ask whether funding covers equipment only or also installation and working capital. Compare total repayment obligations and currency exposure rather than relying on an advertised headline rate.

Infrastructure, people and evidence of performance

Plan preventive maintenance, temperature records, alarm response and product acceptance procedures before opening. Staff must know who can accept goods, change settings or release a quarantined batch. Agree how product ownership and responsibility are documented.

The UNEP/FAO sustainable cold-chain report stresses a system-wide approach: a cold room should work with energy, handling, transport and markets. Buying a single asset does not create that whole system.

How Travo can assist with the logistics plan

Travo’s agricultural transport service describes farm produce movement, refrigerated transport and recurring distribution enquiries. Its warehouse service provides a separate starting point for storage and fulfilment enquiries; confirm the specific temperature-controlled scope before booking.

Contact Travo with your products, location, volumes and intended routes. For practical operations, read the refrigerated truck guide and export cold storage guide. Logistics assistance is distinct from franchise rights, finance approval or an investment guarantee.
