Travel plans can change unexpectedly. A business meeting in Abuja might be postponed, a family event may move to another date, or an emergency could affect your departure. Fortunately, you can change flight date online without necessarily cancelling your existing ticket.
However, changing a flight is not always free. Airlines have different rescheduling policies, and understanding these conditions can save you money and unnecessary stress.
With Travo.ng, travellers can get practical flight booking assistance when adjusting their travel arrangements.
How to Change Flight Date Online in Nigeria
Most airlines allow passengers to modify eligible bookings through their websites or mobile applications.
The process usually involves a few steps:
- Visit the airline’s official website.
- Select the “Manage Booking” or “My Trips” section.
- Enter your booking reference and surname.
- Choose the flight you want to reschedule.
- Select your preferred new travel date.
- Review any applicable charges.
- Complete payment and confirm your updated booking.
After completing the process, check your email for the revised itinerary.
For travellers who booked through an agency, contacting the original booking provider may be necessary.
What Does It Cost to Change Your Flight Date?
Flight rescheduling costs depend on the airline, ticket conditions, available seats, and departure date.
For example, someone moving a Lagos-to-Abuja flight from Friday to Monday may pay more if Monday’s available fares are higher.
Common charges include:
- Change fee: An administrative charge imposed by some airlines.
- Fare difference: The additional amount when the new ticket costs more.
- Service fee: An applicable charge when an agent handles the modification.
Some flexible tickets permit date changes without an airline change fee, although fare differences may still apply.
Always review the total amount before confirming your new departure.
When Should You Reschedule Your Flight?
The earlier you request a change, the better your chances of finding suitable seats.
This becomes particularly important during Christmas, Easter, public holidays, and other busy travel periods in Nigeria.
Flights between Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt can experience increased demand around weekends and major events.
Waiting until departure day may leave you with fewer options, higher fares, or restrictions that prevent changes.
If your travel plans become uncertain, check your ticket conditions immediately rather than waiting until the last minute.
Can You Change Flight Date Online After Missing Your Flight?
Missing a flight can complicate rescheduling.
Some airlines classify passengers who fail to check in or board as no-shows. Depending on the fare rules, the ticket may attract additional charges or lose its remaining value.
If you are stuck in Lagos traffic while heading to Murtala Muhammed Airport, contact your airline before departure whenever possible.
Do not assume your ticket will automatically remain valid for another flight.
Common Mistakes That Make Flight Rescheduling Expensive
One frequent mistake is choosing a new departure date without checking the total fare difference.
Another is assuming every airline offers free modifications.
Travellers should also confirm that the updated ticket contains the correct passenger details, destination, departure airport, and travel time.
For connecting flights, changing one segment may affect the entire itinerary.
Keep your updated booking confirmation accessible before travelling.
