You have booked your flight, packed your bags, and suddenly realised your luggage exceeds the airline’s allowance. This happens frequently, especially when travelling for holidays, business trips, or family visits. Fortunately, you can often add baggage after booking without cancelling your flight or purchasing another ticket.
Whether you are flying from Lagos to Abuja or travelling internationally, knowing how to purchase additional baggage can save you unnecessary airport charges and last-minute stress.
Can You Add Baggage After Booking Your Flight?
Most airlines allow passengers to purchase extra baggage after confirming their tickets. However, the process depends on the airline, ticket category, route, and available baggage options.
For example, someone travelling from Lagos to Port Harcourt might book a cheaper ticket with limited checked baggage. If their luggage increases before departure, they may need to purchase additional weight.
Airlines generally offer three options:
- Purchase extra baggage through their website or mobile application.
- Contact airline customer service to request additional luggage.
- Pay for excess baggage at the airport check-in counter.
Buying additional baggage before reaching the airport is often cheaper than paying at check-in.
How to Add Baggage After Booking Online
If your airline supports online baggage purchases, the process is usually straightforward.
- Visit the airline’s official website.
- Find the “Manage Booking” or “My Trips” section.
- Enter your booking reference and surname.
- Select the option to add baggage.
- Choose the additional weight or number of bags permitted.
- Complete payment and save your updated booking confirmation.
Some airlines restrict online baggage purchases close to departure, so avoid waiting until the travel date.
If your ticket was arranged through a travel booking service, contact the provider to confirm whether baggage changes can be processed through them.
What Does Extra Baggage Cost in Nigeria?
Additional baggage charges vary considerably between domestic and international flights.
For domestic routes such as Lagos–Abuja or Abuja–Kano, airlines may charge according to excess weight, baggage pieces, or prepaid baggage packages.
International flights can involve higher charges, particularly when travelling with additional suitcases.
Before paying, confirm:
- Your existing baggage allowance.
- The additional weight or bags required.
- Whether advance payment offers savings.
- The maximum weight permitted per suitcase.
- Any restrictions on oversized luggage.
Always check the airline’s current baggage rates rather than relying on previous travel experiences.
Avoid These Mistakes When Adding Extra Luggage
One common mistake is assuming that every flight ticket includes the same baggage allowance.
A passenger booking an economy ticket from Lagos to Accra may have different baggage privileges from someone travelling on another fare category.
Another mistake is confusing cabin baggage with checked luggage. Paying for additional checked baggage does not automatically increase your hand luggage allowance.
Also, remember that connecting flights operated by different airlines may have separate baggage conditions.
Confirm these details before leaving home, especially when travelling with several suitcases.
