Uber officially closed its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria on September 2, 2026, ending its 12-year presence in the country. Uber first launched in Lagos in 2014 before expanding its services to other Nigerian cities. (Reuters)

Why Did Uber Close in Nigeria?

Uber said the decision followed a review of its business priorities and investment focus across Africa. The company did not give one specific reason for leaving Nigeria.

Uber also clarified that its exit was not caused by the recent Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) directive concerning e-hailing operations at Nigerian airports. (Reuters)

What Does the Closure Mean?

Passengers in Nigeria can no longer request new Uber rides through the app. Former Uber drivers also need to consider other ride-hailing platforms if they want to continue accepting app-based trips.

Bolt and inDrive are among the alternatives available to passengers and drivers, while other local transportation services can also provide options depending on the city.

Transportation Alternatives After Uber

For everyday city rides, passengers can compare Bolt and inDrive based on fare, availability, pickup time and vehicle options.

However, not every journey requires a standard ride-hailing app. Travellers may need airport transfers, dedicated drivers, intercity transportation or logistics services.

How Travo.ng Can Help

Travo.ng can provide transportation solutions for travellers affected by the Uber shutdown. Instead of relying only on ordinary ride-hailing, customers can use Travo.ng for airport transfers, professional driver services, intercity transportation, bus ticket booking, parcel delivery and haulage.

For example, someone travelling to Lagos for business can arrange an airport pickup and a professional driver for their movements around the city. A traveller moving between Nigerian cities can also arrange intercity transportation in advance.

Businesses can use Travo.ng for transportation and logistics requirements, including moving parcels and larger loads.

Planning Transportation After Uber

Uber’s departure has changed the Nigerian transportation market, but passengers still have several options. The best choice depends on whether you need a quick city ride, an airport transfer, a dedicated driver, intercity transportation or a logistics service.

Travo.ng provides a broader option for travellers who need more than a simple ride from one location to another.
