Nigeria Police salary by rank: the 2026 structure

From a constable's ₦48,113 basic to the IGP's ₦1.23m — every rank's pay under the Consolidated Police Salary Structure, what the April 2026 review changed, what allowances really add, and a tool that tells you which rank you earn like.

Bars are proportional to basic pay — notice the jump at Inspector, the graduate entry at ASP, and the cliff between ACP and CP. Tap any row for the breakdown.

📌 How these figures are compiled: basic step-1 amounts from published CONPOSS tables as reported by multiple sources in mid-2026, reflecting the salary review rolling out from April 2026 where reported; ranks marked ≈ are interpolated between published neighbours. Allowances (rent, uniform, transport, risk, duty-tour) are paid on top and vary by posting — take-home is therefore higher than basic. Figures are indicative for public information: the official gazette and the officer's pay slip always prevail. Spotted an update? Tell us.

The fun part

Which rank do you earn like?

Type your monthly income and find your equivalent on the CONPOSS ladder — measured against basic pay at step 1. Whether you outrank your uncle the Sergeant is between you and this page.

Just for fun — nothing is stored, nothing is sent anywhere. The comparison uses basic pay; officers' take-home with allowances runs higher.

Beyond basic pay

Allowances — where take-home is really decided

Two officers on the same rank can take home very different amounts. Posting, risk profile and duties drive these additions:

🏠

Rent / housing

For officers outside barracks accommodation — varies by rank and location

👮

Uniform

Purchase and upkeep of uniforms and kit

🚌

Transport

Movement costs, especially for postings away from residence

⚠️

Hardship & risk

High-risk commands, border areas and difficult postings attract premiums

🧳

Duty tour

Per-diem style allowance for official travel and deployments

🎖️

Senior-officer perks

Entertainment and domestic-staff allowances at commissioner level and above; the IGP's office carries residence, vehicles and staff

📈 What changed in 2026

A federal salary review began rolling out from April 2026, lifting police pay in the 20–30% range as it lands across ranks and commands — which is why a new constable's reported take-home (with allowances) now sits around ₦65,000–₦90,000 despite a ₦48,113 basic. Reviews land in phases, so figures can differ between commands mid-rollout.

🎓 Joining? Where you start decides your pay

Entry rank follows qualification: SSCE holders start as Constable; ND/NCE holders can enter the inspectorate cadre; graduates (B.Sc/HND) enter as ASP via cadet training. The PSC released its list of 50,000 successful constable recruits on 15 July 2026 — check names only at the official portal, npfapplication.psc.gov.ng.

Recruitment is completely free — anyone charging money to "secure" your name on a list or a better grade is scamming you. Report them.

Salary questions

How much does a police constable earn in 2026?
About ₦48,113/month basic at step 1 — with the 2026 review and standard allowances, reported take-home for new constables is roughly ₦65,000–₦90,000 depending on posting.
What does the IGP earn?
Basic salary around ₦1,234,450/month — plus the office's official residence, vehicles, security detail, domestic staff and entertainment allowances. The current holder is IGP Tunji Disu, appointed February 2026.
Why do different websites show different police salaries?
Three reasons: some quote old CONPOSS tables from before recent reviews; some mix basic pay with take-home (allowances included); and the 2026 review is landing in phases, so figures genuinely differ mid-rollout. This page separates basic from take-home and dates its sources — and even so, the official gazette prevails.
Do officers earn more at higher steps within the same rank?
Yes — each rank has incremental steps that rise with years of service, so a long-serving Sergeant out-earns a newly promoted one. Figures on this page are step 1 (entry point of each rank); top steps run meaningfully higher.
Is police recruitment free? How do I check the 2026 list?
Completely free. The PSC published the 50,000-recruit list on 15 July 2026 — check only at the official portal npfapplication.psc.gov.ng (status checks opened 16 July; successful candidates are also contacted by email/SMS). Anyone demanding payment for recruitment, list placement or "salary upgrade" is a scammer.
