Flight prices in Nigeria can change significantly depending on when you travel. A Lagos to Abuja ticket might be affordable on one date and considerably more expensive just two days later. Knowing how to find cheapest day to fly can help you save money without sacrificing convenience.
Whether you’re travelling for business, visiting family, or planning a holiday, choosing the right departure date is often just as important as choosing the airline.
Which Days Are Usually Cheaper to Fly in Nigeria?
There is no single weekday that always offers the lowest airfare. However, Tuesday, Wednesday, and sometimes Saturday can have cheaper options on certain domestic routes.
Flights on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons may cost more because business travellers and weekend visitors are returning home.
For example, someone travelling from Lagos to Abuja on Friday might find a lower fare by departing on Wednesday instead.
The difference depends on airline availability, passenger demand, and how early the booking is made.
How to Find Cheapest Day to Fly Without Guessing
Rather than assuming one weekday is cheaper, compare available flights across several dates.
Start with these practical steps:
- Check flexible travel dates: Compare departures three days before and after your preferred date.
- Compare different airlines: Check available fares from domestic operators serving your route.
- Consider early departures: Morning flights sometimes offer better prices, depending on demand.
- Avoid peak travel periods: Christmas, Easter, and major public holidays can increase ticket prices.
- Book before seats become limited: Waiting until the last minute can leave you with expensive options.

When Should You Book Flights From Lagos to Abuja?
Lagos to Abuja is one of Nigeria’s busiest domestic air routes, serving government officials, business professionals, and regular travellers.
For planned journeys, checking fares two to four weeks before departure gives you more opportunities to compare prices.
However, booking early does not automatically guarantee the cheapest ticket.
Airlines adjust fares according to demand, remaining seats, and travel periods.
If your meeting is scheduled for Thursday morning, travelling on Wednesday evening might provide more flexibility than booking an expensive Thursday morning departure.
Remember to consider accommodation costs before changing your travel date.
Avoid These Mistakes When Searching for Cheap Flights
Many travellers focus only on the advertised ticket price.
Unfortunately, a cheaper flight can become expensive when additional expenses are included.
Before confirming your booking, check:
- Baggage allowance and excess luggage charges.
- Transportation costs to and from the airport.
- Flight departure and arrival times.
- Ticket cancellation and rescheduling conditions.
- Overnight hotel expenses when travelling earlier.
For instance, saving ₦15,000 on airfare makes little financial sense if changing your departure requires a ₦35,000 hotel stay.
Always compare the total cost of your journey.
Finding Affordable Flights During Busy Travel Seasons
Flight demand usually increases during December celebrations, Easter holidays, and other popular travel periods.
Routes connecting Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Owerri can experience particularly strong seasonal demand.
If your schedule allows, consider travelling several days before major holidays rather than immediately before them.
Travellers planning family visits should also coordinate airport pickups early, especially when arriving during busy evening periods.
