Less Than Container Load shipping, commonly called LCL shipping, allows importers to transport cargo by sharing container space with other businesses. Instead of paying for an entire container, you pay for the portion of space your shipment occupies.

For Nigerian businesses importing from China, Turkey, Dubai, Europe and other international markets, LCL can be useful when the shipment is too small to justify a full container. The Nigerian Shippers’ Council specifically identifies LCL consolidation as a way shippers can potentially negotiate more competitive freight costs. (Nigerian Shippers Council)

How LCL Shipping Works

The process starts when your supplier or freight forwarder provides the shipment details, including the cargo type, quantity, dimensions, weight, origin and destination.

Your goods are delivered to a consolidation warehouse, where they are combined with compatible cargo from other importers. The combined shipments are loaded into a container and transported by sea.

When the container reaches Nigeria, the cargo is separated during the deconsolidation process before individual shipments proceed through the required clearance and delivery arrangements.

This is also commonly referred to as groupage cargo in Nigeria. Recent Nigerian Shippers’ Council cases have involved LCL shipments and disputes concerning consolidation and deconsolidation charges. (Nigerian Shippers Council)

When Should You Use LCL Shipping?

LCL is worth considering when your shipment does not contain enough cargo to efficiently fill a 20-foot or 40-foot container.

For example, a Nigerian retailer importing several cartons of shoes, clothing, household goods or accessories from China may prefer LCL instead of waiting until enough stock has accumulated to fill an entire container.

It can also be useful when testing a new product before committing significant capital to a larger shipment.

However, do not assume LCL is always the cheapest option. Compare the complete LCL cost with the cost of booking an FCL shipment.

LCL vs FCL Shipping

With LCL, multiple importers share container space.

With FCL, the importer books the container for their own cargo.

LCL may be suitable for smaller shipments, while FCL can become more practical as cargo volume increases. The right option depends on your cargo volume, type of goods, destination, delivery schedule and the total charges attached to each shipping method.

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has also advised shippers to examine additional services, applicable fees and other charges when negotiating freight arrangements. (Nigerian Shippers Council)

What Can You Ship Through LCL?

LCL can be used for many types of commercial cargo, including:

  • Fashion products
  • Electronics
  • Auto parts
  • Household goods
  • Building materials
  • Machinery components
  • Retail products
  • Business equipment
  • Furniture components
  • General merchandise

The cargo must still comply with applicable import and shipping requirements. Certain dangerous, oversized, fragile or specially regulated goods may require different handling arrangements.

Calculate LCL Charges Carefully

Before accepting an LCL quotation, ask for a complete breakdown of the charges.

Depending on the shipment, costs may include:

  • Ocean freight
  • Origin handling
  • Warehouse or consolidation charges
  • Documentation
  • Destination handling
  • Deconsolidation
  • Customs clearance
  • Port charges
  • Storage
  • Local transportation
  • Final delivery

This is important because an apparently cheap freight rate can become considerably more expensive after additional charges are added.

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has recently intervened in disputes involving LCL and groupage charges, including cases where importers challenged deconsolidation and other fees. (Nigerian Shippers Council)

Give Your Freight Forwarder Accurate Cargo Details

Your quotation should be based on accurate information.

Provide the supplier’s invoice, number of cartons or packages, dimensions, gross weight, commodity description and intended destination where available.

Incorrect measurements can result in disputes over the billable volume. A 2026 Nigerian Shippers’ Council case, for example, involved a disagreement over the CBM used to calculate an LCL shipment. (Nigerian Shippers Council)

Avoid Unauthorised Changes From FCL to LCL

If you agree with a supplier or logistics company that your shipment will move as FCL, make sure the agreed shipping method is clearly documented.

In June 2026, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council reported a dispute involving approximately 50 CBM of cargo from China where an importer expected FCL but the shipment was handled as LCL. The Council attributed the resulting dispute partly to communication problems between the importer, supplier and origin consolidator. (Nigerian Shippers Council)

Confirm whether your quotation is for FCL or LCL before payment and keep the agreed terms in writing.

How Travo.ng Can Help With LCL Shipping

Travo.ng can help businesses coordinate the logistics involved in moving smaller international shipments to Nigeria.

This can include shipment planning, cargo coordination, freight arrangements and transportation from the arrival point to the required destination.

For businesses importing products from overseas suppliers, providing accurate cargo information allows the appropriate shipping arrangement to be considered before the shipment is booked.

Plan Before You Ship

LCL shipping can give Nigerian SMEs and smaller importers access to international sea freight without requiring them to fill an entire container.

Before booking, compare LCL and FCL using the total landed cost, not just the advertised freight rate. Confirm the shipping method, cargo volume, destination charges and deconsolidation fees in advance so there are fewer surprises when your shipment arrives in Nigeria.
