The Omi Eko passenger ferry project is a major Lagos State initiative designed to modernise public water transportation and provide residents with a safer, more reliable and environmentally friendly alternative to road travel.

What Is the Omi Eko Passenger Ferry?

Omi Eko is being developed as a mass public inland-waterway transportation system for Lagos. The project is designed to introduce 15 structured ferry routes covering about 140 kilometres of waterways and connecting 25 upgraded or expanded ferry terminals across the city.

The project also includes electric passenger ferries, passenger stations, jetties, maintenance facilities and intelligent transport systems for areas such as fare collection and passenger information.

Omi Eko Passenger Ferry Capacity

The project plans to introduce 75 state-of-the-art electric vessels, with each vessel designed to carry up to 440 passengers. This large passenger capacity is intended to support mass public transportation across Lagos waterways.

The electric vessels are also expected to contribute to cleaner water transportation by reducing reliance on conventional fuel-powered boats.

Omi Eko Passenger Ferry Routes

The Omi Eko project is designed around 15 priority ferry routes.

These routes will cover approximately 140 kilometres of waterways and connect different communities through a structured ferry network. The project includes both trunk and feeder services designed to improve connections between ferry terminals and other forms of transportation.

Omi Eko Passenger Ferry Terminals

The project includes the development and upgrading of 25 ferry terminals and jetties.

These facilities are intended to provide better passenger boarding areas, improved waiting facilities and stronger connections with road-based transportation.

Some terminals will also have electric charging infrastructure to support the project’s electric ferry fleet.

Omi Eko Passenger Ferry for Commuters

One of the main purposes of Omi Eko is to improve daily commuting across Lagos.

Workers and residents living near waterways can potentially use passenger ferry services to travel between residential areas, commercial districts and other destinations without relying entirely on congested roads.

Omi Eko Passenger Ferry for Tourists

Tourists visiting Lagos may also benefit from the development of a modern passenger ferry network.

Water transportation can provide connections to:

  • Waterfront destinations
  • Hotels
  • Island communities
  • Tourist attractions
  • Business districts
  • Other locations connected by waterways

Omi Eko Passenger Ferry Tickets

The project includes intelligent transport systems that are expected to support fare collection and passenger information.

However, travellers should distinguish between the planned Omi Eko passenger ferry network and existing ferry services currently operating in Lagos. The full Omi Eko network is still being developed, so passengers should confirm the current route, operating status and applicable fare before travelling.

Is the Omi Eko Passenger Ferry Fully Operational?

The Omi Eko project is being implemented in phases and is not yet a fully operational city-wide ferry network.

The current project involves developing waterways, ferry infrastructure, terminals, electric vessels and the operational systems required to support the network.

Existing passenger ferry services continue to operate on selected Lagos routes, but these should not automatically be described as Omi Eko services.

Benefits of Omi Eko Passenger Ferries

The project is intended to provide several benefits, including:

  • Improved passenger mobility
  • Reduced pressure on Lagos roads
  • More reliable water transportation
  • Cleaner electric ferry operations
  • Improved passenger safety
  • Better ferry terminals
  • More organised routes
  • Improved connections with other transport modes

The wider project is intended to create an efficient, resilient and affordable waterways transportation system for Lagos.

Plan Your Omi Eko Passenger Ferry Journey

The Omi Eko passenger ferry project is designed to become an important part of Lagos’s future public transportation network. With 15 planned routes, approximately 140 kilometres of waterways, 25 ferry terminals and 75 electric passenger vessels, it aims to make water transportation more organised, sustainable and accessible.

As implementation continues, passengers should confirm the current operating status of their preferred route and ferry service before travelling.

Travo.ng can help coordinate Lagos passenger ferry transportation based on your route, schedule, group size and travel requirements.
