The most reliable place to find investment companies registered with SEC in Nigeria is the Securities and Exchange Commission’s current operator register. A copied list can become outdated, and a name that resembles a registered firm does not establish that the person contacting you represents it.

Use SEC’s Find a Registered Operator service to search the legal name and inspect the actual record. Verify the status and authorised function relevant to the service being offered. Registration is a regulatory check, not a promise that an investment will be profitable or suitable.

How to check a company step by step

  1. Obtain the full legal name from the proposal, rather than only an app name or social-media handle.
  2. Search the SEC register and compare the exact company name and identifiers.
  3. Review its current account status and authorised functions.
  4. Compare the offer with the function recorded, and ask SEC about any discrepancy.
  5. Confirm the firm’s genuine contact details independently before sharing information or sending money.

Why the authorised function matters

The register includes different operator categories, such as fund or portfolio managers, trustees and investment advisers. Those functions are not interchangeable. A company’s appearance in a register does not by itself show that every product, platform or activity using its name is authorised.

Ask who is legally responsible for the proposed product and which permission applies. Where a platform uses a separate administrator, custodian or adviser, identify each party’s role. Check unclear claims with the regulator or a suitably qualified professional before relying on them.

A live register is better than a permanent static ranking

Use the official list at the time of your decision. This article does not rank companies by returns or copy a shortlist as if registration cannot change. Save the date of your check and review any restrictions or warnings relevant to the firm and product.

CAC company registration and SEC authorisation answer different questions. A corporate identity record alone should not be treated as proof of permission to conduct a particular capital-market activity.

Check the offer as well as the company

Request clear product documents, fees, withdrawal rules, risk information and the identity of the contracting entity. Understand how money is held and which complaint process applies. Be cautious about pressure to pay immediately or promises of returns that are presented as risk-free without a proper explanation.

Do not send money to a beneficiary merely because someone has copied a registered company’s logo. Establish whether the offer and payment instructions originate from the genuine firm. If details conflict, pause the transaction and verify the discrepancy through official channels.

Frequently asked questions

Is a registered company automatically the best investment choice?

No. Registration does not assess suitability for your financial position or guarantee returns. Review the product and obtain appropriate advice for the decision.

Where can I find the current list?

Return to the SEC operator register and search the legal name. Use the regulator’s current information rather than an old screenshot or an unverified social-media list.
