Finding a clean public toilet in Nigeria can be challenging, especially when travelling through busy cities, motor parks, markets, or unfamiliar locations. Whether you are commuting across Lagos, travelling from Abuja to Kaduna, or taking a long interstate journey, knowing where to find decent restroom facilities can make your trip more comfortable.
Public sanitation remains a concern in many Nigerian communities. While some shopping malls, airports, petrol stations, and transport terminals provide maintained toilets, others have limited facilities or inconsistent cleaning.
Planning your journey properly can help you avoid unnecessary discomfort.
Where to Find a Clean Public Toilet in Nigeria
Not every public restroom offers the same level of cleanliness. Some facilities are regularly maintained, while others lack running water, soap, or proper waste disposal.
When searching for a public toilet in Nigeria, consider these locations:
- Shopping malls: Major malls in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt generally provide restrooms for visitors.
- Airports: Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport have toilet facilities within their terminals.
- Petrol stations: Larger filling stations along major highways may provide toilets for travellers.
- Restaurants: Established restaurants and fast-food outlets often have customer restrooms.
- Motor parks: Some organised transport terminals provide paid toilet facilities, although cleanliness varies.
Always check the condition of a facility before using it, particularly when travelling with children.
What It Costs to Use Public Toilets in Nigeria
Some public toilets are free, especially those inside shopping malls, airports, and certain commercial establishments.
However, toilets operated by private attendants in markets, motor parks, and roadside locations may require payment.
Charges vary by location and operator. Carrying small cash denominations is useful because attendants may not accept transfers.
Travellers should also keep tissues, hand sanitiser, and personal hygiene supplies nearby, especially when travelling outside major cities.
Finding Restrooms During Long Interstate Journeys
Travelling from Lagos to Abuja, Ibadan to Benin City, or Abuja to Lokoja often involves several hours on the road.
During these journeys, restroom availability depends on your route and planned stopping points.
For example, passengers travelling along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway may find facilities at established service stations and restaurants.
However, stopping randomly along highways is not always advisable, particularly at night or in isolated areas.
Before departure, identify suitable rest stops and discuss necessary breaks with your driver.
Travo.ng provides transport coordination and vehicle hire services that can help travellers arrange journeys with practical stopping plans.
How Families Can Manage Toilet Stops While Travelling
Families travelling with young children or elderly passengers should pay particular attention to restroom access.
Children may need more frequent breaks, while elderly travellers may require facilities with easier access.
Before booking transportation, consider:
- Whether the journey includes scheduled rest stops.
- How frequently passengers can request breaks.
- Whether suitable toilets are available along the route.
- How long the journey will take during traffic.
For airport transfers, allowing enough time before departure can also prevent uncomfortable situations.
