Nigeria–Niger border cargo clearance needs a route-specific plan. Traders searching for Jibiya border clearing services, Illela border clearing or Maigatari customs clearance should first identify the origin, destination and type of goods. A clearing quotation should confirm the relevant border post and customs procedure, the counterpart representative in Niger and the transport arrangements on both sides.

Do not load a truck solely because someone says “the northern border is open”. Access, commodity restrictions, examination arrangements and transport conditions must be checked for the selected route and departure date.

Jibiya, Illela and Maigatari are different route choices

Northern cargo enquiry planning
Search or routeWhat to establish
Jibiya / KatsinaExact post, loading origin, onward destination and counterpart agent.
IllelaCrossing access, cargo acceptance and the agreed Niger-side procedure.
MaigatariWhether the shipment is ordinary border trade, transit or a specific zone transaction.
Kano-based agentWho attends at the frontier and how inland collection connects to release.

The Nigeria Immigration border-management strategy’s crossing annex lists these northern border locations. It is a historical geographic reference, not confirmation of today’s cargo operating hours. Obtain operational confirmation from the responsible authorities and provider before committing the vehicle.

What a Katsina or Kano land-border clearing agent should explain

For Katsina border customs clearance, ask which post will process the goods and who is accountable for the declaration. For a Kano land-border clearing agent, distinguish inland coordination from physical border representation: Kano is a collection or coordination location, not a substitute name for the frontier crossing.

Request the clearing company’s current Nigeria Customs Service authorisation, responsible person, commodity experience and counterpart-country arrangements. Ask whether the quote includes Nigerian formalities only or also Niger clearance, transit and final delivery. Keep the agent appointment and transport order clear so a handover between providers does not leave responsibilities unassigned.

Prepare the cargo file before requesting a truck

Provide a commercial description detailed enough to identify the goods: material, use, model or grade where relevant. Add the invoice value, quantities, gross and net weight, packaging, country of production and parties to the transaction. A vague description such as “general goods” is not a useful classification brief.

Confirm product approvals, customs declarations and financial or origin documents required for the actual import or export. Agricultural products, livestock, food and industrial equipment may require different checks. Our land-border clearing document guide gives the basic review structure; the licensed professional should confirm applicability to the shipment.

Origin preferences and Niger’s changed ECOWAS position

ECOWAS’s January 2025 statement recorded Niger’s withdrawal and transitional treatment of goods under ETLS until further arrangements were determined. Do not present Niger as an unchanged member or assume every consignment is duty-free. Ask for the currently applicable treatment, origin eligibility and supporting evidence for your goods at the time of shipment.

Our ECOWAS clearance guide explains the origin issue. The place a trader bought goods, a driver’s nationality and a truck registration do not establish qualifying product origin. Preferential treatment and permission to use a route are separate questions.

Maigatari border trade and free-zone enquiries

A shipment involving a free trade or export-processing zone needs its intended procedure identified explicitly. Customs’ July 2025 newsletter discusses Maigatari Free Trade Zone operations and its location near Niger. That announcement does not itself prove that your shipment qualifies for zone treatment or that all operational arrangements are complete today.

Ask which entity receives the cargo, what authorisations and movement documents apply and whether the goods will remain in a zone or enter another customs territory. Do not combine an ordinary border-clearing estimate with an assumed zone exemption.

Protect the delivery plan from avoidable delays

Agree document-review and dispatch milestones, cargo securing, inspection access, storage options and communications with the receiving party. For a mixed load, keep each owner’s goods identifiable. Record container and seal details where relevant and agree the procedure if authorities require examination or a change of seal.

Compare the complete cost: statutory assessments, agent fees, counterpart costs, trucking, handling and waiting. There is no universal northern-border clearance rate or guaranteed release period. Obtain written approval for extra services and keep official assessments and receipts.

Request northern border logistics coordination

Send Travo a Jibiya, Illela or Maigatari enquiry with pickup point, destination, commodity, documents available and intended date. Travo can assess the coordination requirement and confirm whether an appropriate clearing and transport arrangement is available. Its haulage service supports inland cargo planning, while warehouse coordination can help with staged movement. Confirm the named partner, route and scope before dispatch; a general enquiry does not reserve border access.

Frequently asked questions for northern traders

Can I get a single Jibiya clearing rate?

A useful estimate needs the product, value, origin, weight, procedure and route. Ask which statutory amounts are provisional and distinguish them from the agent’s fee. A price without those details may omit counterpart clearance or onward trucking.

Can an agent in Kano handle my border shipment?

That depends on the provider’s authority and frontier arrangements. Ask who will attend the relevant post and handle the Niger-side work. A Kano office address alone does not establish a complete cross-border service.

When should I book the truck?

Once the route and documents have been reviewed and the responsible team confirms the dispatch plan. Agree how long the quote remains valid and what happens if operational access changes before collection. Do not assume an earlier shipment proves today’s availability.
