Start With the Old Leaves and New Leaves

Nitrogen deficiency commonly becomes visible on older leaves first because the plant moves available nitrogen towards younger growth. Plants may become pale green or yellow, grow slowly and look smaller than healthy plants nearby.

For maize farmers, this is especially important. A maize field that becomes progressively pale rather than developing healthy dark-green foliage may need investigation before simply applying more fertilizer.

Phosphorus deficiency can cause slow, stunted growth, while severe cases may produce reddish or purplish colouring. Potassium shortage often shows as yellowing, browning or scorched-looking edges on older leaves.

Look at How the Problem Spreads Across the Farm

When trying to detect nutrient deficiency in crops, do not inspect only one damaged plant.

A nutritional problem often affects groups of plants or larger sections where soil conditions are similar. Disease or insect problems may appear more irregularly, although field patterns alone should never be treated as a final diagnosis.

Soil Testing Can Prevent Expensive Guesswork

Visual symptoms provide clues, not absolute proof.

When several deficiencies look similar, soil testing can help determine soil pH and nutrient availability. Plant tissue analysis can provide additional information where a more detailed diagnosis is required.

This becomes particularly useful for commercial maize, tomato, cassava and vegetable farms where applying the wrong fertilizer across several hectares can become a significant expense.

Collect samples from representative parts of the farm rather than taking soil from one convenient location. Keep samples properly labelled so results can be matched to the correct field or section.

Do Not Assume More Fertilizer Is Always the Answer

Sometimes nutrients are present in the soil but the crop cannot use them effectively.

Incorrect soil pH, damaged roots, poor drainage, drought and unsuitable fertilizer timing can all affect nutrient uptake. Excessive fertilizer can also damage crops and increase production costs.
